Elegidos Por Dios. Chosen By God

Vestíos, pues, como escogidos de Dios, santos y amados, de entrañable misericordia, de benignidad, de humildad, de mansedumbre, de paciencia; soportándoos unos a otros, y perdonándoos unos a otros si alguno tuviere queja contra otro.
Colosenses 3:12-13a.

Me encanta el hecho de que Dios nos ha escogido, de que hemos sido declarados santos y somos sus amados. El nos ha escogido con un propósito especial y por eso nos hemos despojado de nuestra ropa antigua (el viejo hombre), según lo enseña Pablo en los versículos anteriores. Dios está haciendo un trabajo especial en nosotros, y por medio de nosotros, y tenemos que vestirnos adecuadamente. Nada de lo que hacemos en su nombre es en vano. Es importante recordar que Dios nos ha escogido al leer lo que Pablo dice en el resto de este versículo. Dios me ha declarado santo. Aun cuando viva en Cristo, buscando su reino y voluntad, me equivocaré. Pese a ello, en tanto hijo de Dios, he sido declarado santo. La sangre de Jesús derramada en la cruz ya ha pagado mis pecados. No tengo que preocuparme por fallar en mi deseo de agradar al Padre. No tengo que preocuparme por arruinar todo. Dios tiene un plan y ya me ha dicho que soy santo delante de El. Pero no termina allí: también debo recordar que soy su amado.

Dios me llama a hacer cosas que van en contra de la corriente de este mundo y en contra mi carne, pero lo hace porque me ama. El sabe cuál es el mejor camino. Ahora que me he quitado la ropa del viejo hombre, él quiere que me vista con prendas que le agraden. Como veremos más adelante, las prendas que nos llama a ponernos son realmente las partes del fruto del Espíritu Santo. Nuestra ropa nueva tendrá que ver con la manera que tratamos con los demás. Cuando nos vistamos así, la santidad del Señor será vista a través de nosotros.

La primera prenda en la lista es entrañable misericordia. Podemos usar el sinónimo: compasión. La compasión debe ser una de las marcas del cristiano que vive en este mundo tan frío. Es sorprendente ver lo que la compasión puede lograr. Me acuerdo que hace unos años escuché el testimonio de un cristiano que había pertenecido a una secta. Esa secta enviaba a sus miembros a las calles para vender rosas y ellos daban todo el dinero a su líder. Vendían todo el día y hasta en las noches. No importaba si hacía mucho frío o mucho calor. No comían ni dormían mucho. Un día, cuando hacía mucho calor, un cristiano se le acercó a este hombre mientras vendía las rosas y le ofreció un vaso de agua helada. Le dijo: “Hace bastante calor y estás aquí vendiendo rosas. Te quiero invitar este vaso de agua y te quiero decir que Jesucristo te ama”. Luego se fue. El hombre tomó el agua y siempre recordó lo que hizo el cristiano. Pasaron unos años, salió de la secta y recibió a Cristo como su Señor y Salvador.

Quién sabe cómo el Señor podría usar un acto de compasión en la vida de una persona. Ponte la compasión hoy día. Te cae bien.

Y cualquiera que dé a uno de estos pequeñitos un vaso de agua fría solamente, por cuanto es discípulo, de cierto os digo que no perderá su recompensa.

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. [1]

I love the fact that God has elected us, that we are declared holy and that we are beloved. He has chosen us for a special purpose. That’s why we’ve been so busy taking off the old man in the previous verses. God’s got a special job for us to do and we’ve got to be dressed properly. Nothing that we do in Him will be in vain. It’s so important to remember that God has chosen us when we see what Paul is going to talk about in this verse. He has declared me holy. As I live out my life as a Christian seeking His kingdom and as I seek His will, I’m going to make mistakes, but I’ve been declared holy as a child of God. Jesus blood on the cross has already paid for my sin. I don’t have to worry about failing in my desire to please the Father. I don’t have to worry about messing everything up. God has a plan and has already said that I’m holy in His sight. Not only has He declared me holy, but I’m also his beloved.

God is going to call me to do some things in this verse that are against the way of this world, and against my flesh, but He does it because He loves me. His way is best. He wants me to be dressed in a way that pleases Him now that I’ve taken of the garment of the old man.

You can see if you look ahead that the things that He calls us to put on are really the fruit of the Spirit. Our new wardrobe will have to do with how we relate to others. As we put these things on, the holiness of the Lord will begin to show forth in our lives. The first thing on the list is tender mercies. Another way to say it is, compassion. Compassion should be one of the marks of the Christian in this cold world. It’s amazing what compassion can accomplish in this world. I remember hearing a man telling his testimony on television years ago. He has been involved in a cult that sent their people out on the street corners for many hours a day. They sold roses and gave all the proceeds to their leader. They were fed poorly and slept very little. They sold roses in the cold and in the heat. One day when it was very hot out a Christian walked up to this man and told him something like, “It´s really hot out here and so I just want to give you this cup of cold water and tell you that Jesus loves you.” The Christian then walked away without saying anything else. The man involved in the cult never forgot that and after a few years he left the cult and became a Christian.

Who knows how the Lord could use an act of compassion in the life of someone. Try putting compassion on today. It will fit you nicely.

“And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”[2]
