Oswald Chambers

Salmo 32:7
Tú eres mi refugio;

Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Salmo 64:10
Que se regocijen en el Señor los justos;
que busquen refugio en él;

Salmo 33:21

En él se regocija nuestro corazón,
porque confiamos en su santo *nombre.

Salmo 89:15-16
Dichosos los que saben aclamarte, Señor,
y caminan a la luz de tu presencia;

Fretting springs from a determination to get your own way.

Oswald Chambers

Psalm 32:7, “You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.”

“God cannot endure that unfestive, mirthless attitude of ours, in which we eat our bread in sorrows, with pretentious, busy haste, or even with shame. Through our daily meals He is calling us to rejoice, to keep holiday in the midst of our working day.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Psalm 64:10, “The righteous shall be glad in the Lord and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory.”

Psalm 33:21, “For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name.”

Psalm 89:15-16, “Blessed are the people that know the joyful sound! They walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance. In Your name they rejoice all day long.”65

This weekend was a little different than normal. It was the first Saturday morning since January that we didn’t have any kind of meeting or ministry. I took advantage of the free time to study a little more and talk with my friend Americo. We went to Villa Maria in the evening and ministered to the children there and preached the gospel. When we got there some of the children were waiting for us. They helped us carry the things. I love their enthusiasm. Who knows what God will do with them in the future. They’re really great kids.

Sunday morning I taught Joshua chapters 11-14. I love chapter 14 because it talks about Caleb. He’s one of my heroes. Chapter 14 mentions Caleb’s faithfulness various times. The great thing is that Caleb wasn’t just faithful for a while. He was faithful through many years. He’s really an example for us.

The group that went to Puente Piedra came back with joy. There were several new people at the meeting. It looks like God is giving us a little more influence there. We keep praying for the people of Santa Rosa and San Jose. When will be able to reach out to some of the other surrounding neighborhoods with the gospel? We need to pray for more laborers.

Last night a group of people stayed until late making chocotejas. They made more than 200. We’re continuing to sell the chocolates to raise money for our missions trip.

There is a group of construction workers building in Puente Piedra today. Thanks to a donation we are able to continue the work on the building a little more. I really hope that we will be able to finish the first 4 classrooms soon so that we can have meetings there like we want to. With four rooms finishes we’ll be able to send groups to stay there for 3 or 4 days at a time as well. That way we will be able to minister to the people in the area more effectively.

History Repeats Itself

The day before yesterday I read a little of the history of ancient China with my children. We read that the oldest boy was responsible for making sure that his father had a good breakfast every morning. He prepared the breakfast for his father each day. Marco (my son) was very interested because he’s studying Chinese together with Anna, one of his sisters. They’ve had the opportunity to practice their Chinese with some Chinese immigrants that live close to the house too. This morning Marco woke us up and served us breakfast in bed. He made me an omelet with toast and scrambled eggs with toast for his mother. It’s good to study history with our children sometimes because history definitely repeats itself…

Psalm 127:3
Children are a blessing
and a gift from the Lord.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, "Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves: grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate. But costly grace...is the kingly rule of Christ, for whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble, it is the call of Jesus Christ at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows Him."

The Gospel El Evangelio

If man makes a gospel—and he is very fond of doing it, like children making toys—what does he do? He is very pleased with it for a few moments, and then he pulls it to pieces, and makes it up in another way; and this continually.

The religions of modern thought are as changeable as the mists on the mountains. See how often science has altered its very basis! Science is notorious for being most scientific in destruction of all the science that has gone before it. I have sometimes indulged myself, in leisure moments, in reading ancient natural history, and nothing can be more comic. Yet this is by no means an abstruse science.

In twenty years time, some of us may probably find great amusement in the serious scientific teaching of the present hour, even as we do now in the systems of the last century. It may happen that, in a little time, the doctrine of evolution will be the standing jest of schoolboys.

The like is true of the modern divinity which bows its knee in blind idolatry of so-called science. Now we say, and do so with all our heart, that the gospel which we preached forty years ago we will still preach in forty years time if we are alive. And, what is more, that the gospel which was taught of our Lord and his apostles is the only gospel now on the face of the earth.

Ecclesiastics have altered the gospel, and if it had not been of God it would have been stifled by falsehood long ago; but because the Lord has made it, it abideth for ever. Everything human is before long moon-struck, so that it shifts with every phase of the lunar orb; but the Word of the Lord is not after men, for it is the same yesterday, today, and for ever.

Charles Spurgeon

Carlos Spurgeon

Forgive me for not having written anything in the blog in the last week. The computer broke and I haven’t had time to go to write anything in a public internet place. I’ve only had time to answer the most urgent e-mails and that’s about it. Here’s what’s been happening around here so that you can be up to date.

The group from Boston arrived last Thursday night. They got here about 11:00 p.m. They had just a little bit of time to get to know the group from Maryland. Everyone from the Maryland group stayed awake all night because we had to leave for the airport at 2:45 a.m.

Friday: The Boynton group cleaned the building, did some painting and made 250 chocotejas at night.

Saturday: The group from Boynton sold 253 chocotejas in the morning. We went to Villa Maria in the afternoon and evening with the people from Koinonia Surco, the Boynton Beach group and a group that is visiting the Bible College. They’re from Oregon. We had a dinner for 25 people.

Sunday: We had our 10:00 a.m. meeting in Surco and then went to Puente Piedra in the afternoon.

Monday: A day of tourism for the group from Boynton Beach. We went to the Cathedral of Lima, the Museum of the Holy Inquisition and the Indian Market. We ate pastries in downtown Lima and had anticuchos for lunch. (Anticuchos are beef hearts on a stick.)

Tuesday: The Boynton Beach group went to minister in Playa Hermosa Cañete with Pastor Jaime while the group from Oregon went to do an evangelistic outreach in San José Puente Piedra. We got back to the church at 8:15 p.m., in time to participate in the prayer meeting.

Mike and Linda have come from the States. They are with Campus Crusade for Christ and are working with the Jesus Film project. They will be showing the film in San José on Monday night and in Playa Hermosa Cañete on Tuesday night as well. Let’s be in prayer for that.

Tomorrow: There will be a breakfast for the women of the church. Betty and Linda will be sharing from the word of God and Tracy will be leading the worship. Everything is free and breakfast will be served at 9:00 a.m. sharp.

Maryland y Boynton Maryland and Boynton

The group from Maryland left last night. It was a blessing from God having them here with us. Thanks for all of your help guys.

The group from Boynton Beach arrived last night too. It’s been so good to see some of our friends again and to meet new ones as well. There is nothing like Koinonia between brothers.

Some of the guys from Boynton are helping to put a roof on a house were a sister from the church lives, others are painting. Some are cleaning the church building and some are organizing supplies. You don’t need a special talent to come and serve as a short term missionary. You just need a good attitude and a willingness to serve. I invite you to come and help us in the work here in Peru.

We had a great time ministering in San José yesterday. (I’m not talking about San Jose California.) San José is a neighborhood that’s on the other side of the paved road from Santa Rosa de Villa. I love to minister like we did yesterday. We didn’t bring a speaker or microphone; we brought a ball, some balloons, a guitar, Bibles and our testimonies. When we got there we went to invite the people. When no one showed up we started to pray and when we finished praying the people started getting to the soccer area where we were planning to have our meeting. It made me remember the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman. Jesus had ministered to her before the disciples got there. When they arrived after looking for food, and didn’t know what had taken place between Jesus and the woman. They didn’t know that the woman had entered the city and told everyone about her encounter with the Lord. Now the people were on their way. They wanted to here Jesus. Yesterdays experience reminds me of John Wesley too. He preached to thousands of people in the countryside. He preached to more people in the countryside than he did in churches.

We ministered to the children while the adults observed everything that was going on. It was really beautiful. I was able to share with a few people that we ministered to the first time we went there about a month ago. I believe God wants us to do some more ministry en the neighborhood there. We don’t have enough workers and we don’t have enough time but we’re praying about that.

La Fe y El Sufrimiento Faith and Suffering

The gifts of belief and suffering are a packaged deal. Not only are they impossible to separate, each gift also strengthens the other. If we have been given the gift of belief in Christ, we will follow Christ. Following Christ means taking risks, going against popular trends, being misunderstood, and even enduring physical and emotional pain. Belief often leads to suffering. As we experience the same kinds of suffering that Jesus lived, we come to know him in a richer and deeper way. The cycle begins again because suffering strengthens our belief. Don’t expect to be able to filter suffering out of your life without reducing your belief in Christ.

From The Voice of the Martyrs

For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. (Hebrews 2:10, NKJV)

La lluvia The Rain

A little more than a week ago I mentioned that we didn’t know what to expect in Villa Maria on Saturdays. This Saturday was different because it started to rain on Thursday night. It rained on Friday and Saturday night too. The amphitheatre was filled with water that smelled terrible and in addition to that there were only a few people in the park due to the rain. We didn’t know what to do but the officials let us use a tent that was set up for another event. We decided to go out and invite the people. A few of the kids from Maryland are skateboarders. They met some other kids riding their boards in the park and started riding with them and talking. I joined in the conversations and ended up sharing the gospel with three guys. One is named Edgar and he was very interested. He started to ask me about how Christianity relates to science and then he asked for my e-mail. He has already sent me a message and I have sent him some information. If it weren’t for the rain we would have never talked to the guys because we would have been busy with our normal program. The rain sent us out with another plan and we were able to preach to Edgar and his friends and several other people too. Thanks for the rain Lord.

Pray for Edgar and his friends. I started to pray for the skateboarders in the park a long time ago but had to wait on the Lord’s timing to share with them. Thanks for the opportunity Lord.

Se Mudan They're Moving

My friends Mark and Alice Robson are leaving the Unites Status on the 22 of August. They will be serving as missionaries in Nairobi Kenya. Pray for them in the coming months because moving from gringo land as we call it here in Peru to Kenya will be a big change. May God bless you Mark and Alice.

Maryland

We’re really enjoying our time with the group that has come to minister with us from Maryland. What a blessing to hear the team worshipping the Lord this morning here in the building. Hearing them worshipping the Lord made all of the headaches of construction, bill paying, etc. worth it all. I pray that the Lord will use this building and more importantly our lives to help reach Peruvians with the gospel, raise up national leaders and missionaries from other countries. Thanks Lord because you’ve already begun the work.

Since we move to the new property about 6 weeks ago or so we have had 56 guests. Each of them has been a blessing. Praise the Lord.

Gloria a Dios.

Koinonia News Koinonia Noticias

We’re doing some remodeling in the building this week and so I don’t have a lot of computer access. We’re adding some columns and taking out the garage door to make the meeting room look nicer and the walls and ceiling stronger.

A group from Maryland will be arriving on Friday morning and the next Thursday night a group arrives from Florida and so we’re anticipating a lot of blessings from the Lord this month.

Pray for us as we reach out into a new neighborhood in Puente Piedra. Those of you that have been to Puente Piedra will understand when I tell you that we’re reaching out to the people on the other side of the main road as well. In addition, we’re planning to do some more construction on the building in the next month. It will be a big help to have a few rooms finished in Puente so that we can send teams to spend a few days there ministering and discipling the people.

Speaking of people in Puente Piedra, pray for Vicente and Janet. They are a couple that attend the church and want to be more involved in the ministry. Pray for Erica too. She’s a teenager that is attending the Bible studies and needs to know the Lord.

El Misionero The Missionary

A few years ago a long time missionary here in Peru came to my house for a visit. I was so excited to meet him and learn from him. He lived in Ayacucho in the middle of the terrorist movement. I have taught the Bible in a church of Quechuas that he founded. Ayacucho is the place where the Shining Path movement began here in Peru. Many, many people were killed as a result of their actions. Any “gringo” missionary that had the courage to stick it out in those dangerous times deserved to be heard. After all, his life was in constant danger and he preached the gospel in areas where no police officer dared to go.

With great anticipation regarding the answer I asked him, “What is the advice that you would give to a young and inexperienced missionary like me? His answer… be holy, live a life worthy of your calling. We’ve had enough missionaries and pastors that aren’t holy. We don’t need any more of them.

Joel

Joel 2:12-14,

Joel 2:12-14
“Now, therefore,” says the Lord,
“Turn to Me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
So rend your heart, and not your garments;
Return to the Lord your God,
For He is gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And He relents from doing harm.
Who knows if He will turn and relent,
And leave a blessing behind Him—
A grain offering and a drink offering
For the Lord your God?

Never has the churched talked so much about being relevant, creative and up to date on the latest technology. Personally, I can’t remember a time when the church has had less influence in the world. I say that knowing that I’m only forty five years old. I may not be as old as some but I’m old enough to the old time preachers that still dared to talk about repentance being other than simply saying that you’re sorry. I remember the days when repentance meant turning our backs on sin and unrighteousness. The days when Christians were still concerned about having a heart after God and were talking about how God was molding and shaping their character, the days when holiness was still something worthy of pursuing. I miss the guys that really had a passion for the Lord, the guys that hearts burned for a world without Christ, the men that wanted God to be glorified in their lives, not just in their sermons. God I know that there is still a remnant. I know that you’re faithful and so I’ll keep calling on your name. Maybe you will turn and relent and leave a blessing behind. If not, all of the new church programs, technology, and creativity won’t make a bit of a difference.

Tomás A.
Kempis

Colosenses 3:15

What is the use of praying if at the very moment of prayer we have so little confidence in God that we are busy planning our own kind of answer to our prayer? Thomas Merton

Isaiah 65:24, “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”

“All men desire peace, but few desire the things that make for peace.” Thomas A. Kempis

Colossians 3:15, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body: and be thankful.”

Isaiah 32:17-19 “The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever. My people will dwell in peaceful habitation, In secure dwellings, and in quiet resting place, though hail comes down and the city is brought low in humiliation.”

Zechariah 8:16 “These are the things you should do: Speak each man truth to his neighbor; Give judgment in your gates for truth, justice and peace.”

Vendiendo Chocotejas Selling Chocotejas

Gloria a Dios. Ha sido tan bueno.

We hit the streets yesterday morning. We were on a mission to sell chocotejas for the Discipleship school. I have to confess that I didn’t think that we would sell any to people that we don’t know in the street. Between three men we sold 83 chocotejas en an hour and a half. Praise God. He has been so good.

Villa Maria

We went to Villa Maria last night like we do every Saturday. The last two weeks there haven’t been a lot of people in the park. Maybe it’s because of the cold or maybe it´s because there is no water in Villa Maria. There is supposed to be water again on the 6th of July.

We’ve had to change the way that we do things. I don’t preach a sermon anymore. Now we divide into small groups and share the word. Last night I shared with two women. One of them is named Rosa. She’s been to 4 Christian churches but until last night no one had ever shared the gospel with her. She thought that she had to keep the commandments to get to heaven.

We don’t know what’s going to happen in Villa Maria in the coming weeks but we’ll be praying.
