1 Pedro 1:14 1 Peter 1:14

1Pedro 1:14

1 Peter 1:14
14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;[1]

Commentary

It’s interesting to me that God never calls us adults. We are always children. As I watch my children I see that they are always copying what they see others do. They conform themselves to what they see happening around them. They talk like others; people tell me that my son Marco walks just like I do. As children of God we must obey Him in the same way that I expect my children to obey me. As my children copy what I do we must copy or mimic what we see the Lord Jesus Christ doing in the Bible. I don’t mean that we will do everything in the same way He did. If you ever take a trip to Jerusalem I don’t think that God wants you to enter the city riding a burro. We copy the obedience that we see in Jesus. We don’t try to be like the people of the world that are given over to their own lusts. We live lives of self control and obedience to our Father.

Application
Many times as Christians we choose to sacrifice rather than obey. God tells us to do something at a specific time but we would rather do something else and so we tell God that we will make up for it later. At that moment what we are really saying is that we know better than God and that we actually have something to offer Him outside of His will. The Lord desires us to be obedient children, not adults that have our own opinions. Remember today that the Lord is omniscient. He knows what is best for you and has His perfect time for everything. Obey Him joyfully in the little things and in the big things as well. Put Him first in every area of your life.

It was great to be back in Villa Maria this weekend. I love seeing new people listening to the word of God being taught. I love seeing the people from Koinonia fellowship sharing their faith in little groups in the audience. I love seeing the church outside of the 4 walls.

Sunday was a great time at church in Surco. We had a cookout after church complete with birthday cake. It was the pastors’ birthday. We worshipped together; we shared the word of God together and then ate together. There was great Koinonia. It doesn’t get any better.

Maybe it does get better… the group that went to Puente Piedra to minister returned and we had more Koinonia. They shared with me how the adults were really worshipping God and told me that four new adolescents showed up. A few of the team members went out inviting people to the meeting. They were received by some and rejected by others. It was great being together eating some crackers and sharing a bottle of Guaraná soda. Guaraná is a soda made from a South American berry.

Ceñid los lomos Gird up the loins

1Pedro 1:13

1 Peter 1:13
13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;[1]

To gird up the loins means to prepare to run or work. We are called by Paul to run the good race. We are called to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. We must be disciplined in our thought life as Christians. The enemy is always ready to take advantage of us. On the other hand the Christian that has the loins of his mind girded up will not miss the blessing of receiving from the Lord. He will not listen to the counsel of the wicked, instead he will listen the godly counsel. He will eagerly anticipate opportunities that await him to experience the presence of his Lord and to walk with him.

Application.
Instead of wasting time today help me to meditate on your word more Lord. I need to get an early start on memorizing my verses and meditating on them. Speak to me throughout the day. I ask you to help me keep my mind stayed on you.

Los profetas The prophets

1Pedro 1:10-12

Señor, ayúdame a buscarte. Ayúdame Señor a no desalentarme y a confiar y seguirte solo a ti.

1 Peter 1:10-12
10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.
[1]
Sometimes we have the tendency to think that the prophets heard the word of the Lord and proclaimed it without having to do any work. It was almost as if it were magic it would seem. Peter seems to give us a different idea here. The prophets certainly had a gift from the Lord but the reason they were able to prophesy had to do with the fact that they inquired and searched diligently. They were men that had a hunger for the Lord and His plan regarding our salvation and the world in which we live. As they inquired and searched carefully they received the revelation. The revelation revealed that it would not be in their time period that their ministry would be most effective. It would be for another generation. Even the angels longed to look into the things revealed to the prophets.

Application.
Lord, help me to seek you. As I seek you and study your word carefully your revelation for your people will come. Maybe you will choose to use me for this generation. Maybe the generations to come will be those that will benefit more than the present one. Help me not to be discouraged but to trust you and seek you.

Being a disciple Siendo un discípulo

Matthew 10:25
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25“It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master[1]
Matthew 11:29
29“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls[2]

Being a disciple of Jesus doesn’t mean learning everything that our master knows. That will never happen. Jesus, being God will always know more than us. Being a disciple of Jesus is learning to be like Him.

Mateo 10:25

thousands upon thousands miles y miles

Although there are thousands upon thousands of them in Peru, these two really caught my attention. I had been enjoying the beautiful light of a South American sunset when I observed them in the middle of the busy pan American highway. They were between 5-7 years old. I could tell by their rosy cheeks that they were from the mountains. We were returning from the Wednesday ministry in Puente Piedra and we were stopped at a red light. They were two little brothers selling cigarettes along the busy and polluted pan American highway. The driver of the car in front of us bought a cigarette from the younger brother. The little boy ran to his sibling with a big smile on his face. He was happy to have made about 10 céntimos… the equivalent of a little less than three cents U.S. Those two boys live a tough life. So many children in South America need the love of Christ and the care of a steady family.
Seeing the beautiful sunset I was thankful that God is still in control and doing beautiful things in our world but I couldn’t help but thinking and praying, Lord, help us to do more.” Raise up disciples, send more missionaries and most of all give us your grace and strength.

Noticias desde Koinonia Cañete News from Koinonia Cañete

Pastor Jaime Inga Arellano

Report from Cañete
Pastor Jaime Inga Arellano

We’re working hard but it’s worth it. We do Vacation Bible School in San Vicente in the mornings and there are approximately 50 children. In the afternoon we go to Playa Hermosa and teach approximately 35 children. Sometimes I feel bad because I have so much fun with the children. The lesson has been on the armor of God. I know that in a few months the children will have forgotten a lot of the theory. My hope is that they will have good memories about the Koinonia (fellowship) that we’ve had. That is so important. This time together has been good not only for teaching the children about the armor of God and the protection that it gives, it has also helped us learn to love them and teach them that Christianity can be a lot of fun.

LLeno del Espíritu Filled with the Spirit

Acts chapter 2 is well known. Jesus followers were praying together and the Holy Spirit was given. As a consequence to the baptism of the Holy Spirit the Christians were able to glorify God and preach the word with boldness. We pay less attention to Acts 4. In chapter 4 the Holy Spirit shook the place where the believers were gathered again. It’s great to experience the baptism of the Holy Spirit but sometimes we need another filling. We lack that power to minister, that joy in the Spirit that we once had. We get tired and sin starts to creep into our lives. The words that come out of our mouth are no longer edifying. They are cutting. I realized this morning as I was spending time with the Lord that the pressures of the ministry and a full teaching schedule were starting to weigh on me. I asked for a new filling.

Lord, thanks for filling me anew with your Spirit today.

Normalmente prestamos menos atención a Hechos 4.

Starting the week Comenzando la semana

1 Chronicles 16:8
8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
1 Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
[1]
It’s Monday already. It’s time to start another week. Let’s put the verse above in practice this week and see what God does in our hearts and around us. Let’s remember to give thanks first of all and then be call upon the Lord instead of looking to others first. When we have called on the Lord we’ll be able to make His deeds known among the people.

Today I’ve decided to mention a few prayer requests that we have as a church.

1. Some of you know that we’re trying to purchase a building for the church. The good news is that the building that we want to buy has come down $30,000.00 in price. The owner is now asking $150,000.00. The other side is that we have to come up with at least $75,000.00 down payment. At the present time we have around $45,000.00. The building would serve as a church building and living quarters for missionaries. In the future we would also house students from other countries that would attend our discipleship school for preparing missionaries for the field.
2. This week a group from Calvary Chapel San Diego is doing Vacation Bible School with Pastor Jaime in San Vicente and Playa Hermosa Cañete. Pray for them.
3. Pray for the 13 students that are in our present discipleship school. They are really studying and ministering a lot.

2 Timothy 2:1 2 Timoteo 2:1

2 Timothy 2:1
You therefore, my son…

I was body boarding yesterday, or maybe I better say, trying to body board. There I was out in the ocean near a group of young surfers when a guy arrived. He said, “hola, ¿que tal” “Hi, how’s it going?” and then continued on out a little farther to converse with the young guys. He was at least in his mid 50´s and closer to sixty. I noticed that as soon as he got to the young guys they not only received him into the group, he became the leader. He was the life of the party. He was encouraging the young guys and when he caught a wave the young guys cheered him on, loving every minute. It was obvious that there was a dynamic there. These young kids really looked up to the old guy and the old guy loved the energy and enthusiasm of the teenagers.

Biblically speaking we see that the older men in the faith are to be involved in the lives of the young men. Older men in the faith and in age have so much to give to the younger guys. The young guys have so much to offer us old guys. We can accomplish so much working together. Paul saw it this way. He was always looking for young men like Timothy and Titus to work with him. There was no generation gap as far as Paul was concerned. He calls Timothy his son. Timothy respected Paul and listened to his counsel. Paul never dreamed of starting a youth group but he did reach out to the youth whenever he had a chance. Paul saw that the gospel could unite the generations rather than continue to separate them.
If you’re an older guy in age and in the faith, pray about spending time with some of the young guys in the church or in your neighborhood. Ask God to use you. You have a lot to offer. If you’re a young guy, be open to what the Lord might want to teach you through an older man in the church. Let God use you to encourage the older guy too.

2 Timoteo 2:1
“Tú, pues, hijo mío… “

Estaba corriendo tabla usando mi body board ayer, mejor dicho, intentando correr tabla.

1 Peter 1:2
2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
[1]
Commentary
It’s great to know that God has chosen us. How wonderful to know that He knew us long before the world was made. As a parent desires to have children long before they are conceived so our Father chose us before the world. He has not only chosen us but has sanctified us in the sanctification of the Spirit. We have had nothing to do with our salvation. Every good thing is from above coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness or shadow of turning. We are set apart for a specific ministry by the Spirit as He works in us. As we begin to walk in obedience we realize how much we need the blood of Jesus Christ. It is through his blood that we experience the new covenant. In the Old Testament the people had to sacrifice animals and other things through a priest so that they could receive forgiveness of sins. In the New Testament we can now enter into God’s presence at any moment. We are able to find grace to help in time of need. We need the Lord today. We want to obey Him but will need the Holy Spirit’s help. May grace and peace be multiplied to us today.

Application.
Lord, help me to remember that you have a purpose for my life. I will not understand your purpose for giving me life today apart from you. You have chosen me so that I might be separate or sanctified. It is through obeying your Holy Spirit today that my life will take on new meaning. I will need your forgiveness today. Thanks for shedding your blood on the cross for me. Thanks that your hearts desire is to give me your grace and your peace. Thanks that your peace is not dependent on my circumstances. It is a peace that the world cannot understand. I will have your peace today as I walk in obedience to your plan, listening attentively to your Holy Spirit. I love you Lord.

La cosecha The Harvest

Luke 10:2
2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.[1]

At the present time we have people asking us to start churches in four different cities of Peru. In addition to those three cities there are also other neighborhoods here in Lima that still need a Koinonia (Calvary Chapel) style church. These are people that are Christians and have had contact with us through the ministry here in Lima. Either there is no Christian church in their area or there is no church that teaches the Bible in an expository way. God continues to show me that Peruvians are like sheep without a shepherd. God, please raise up more workers for the harvest here in Peru and worldwide.

Consider missionary service on either a short term or long term basis today. Don’t just automatically say no if you haven’t prayed about it first.

Noticias de Puente Piedra News from Puente Piedra

Peru is a country that has a lot of children. It is our privilege to minister to over three hundred children a week. This week we are doing a Vacation Bible School in Puente Piedra in addition to our regular weekly ministries. Yesterday there were over 80 children present.
Yesterday’s theme was from the book of Jeremiah. The children learned that we are the clay and that God is the potter. He is molding and shaping our lives according to His purpose.
Pray for the children that are hearing the word of God on a weekly basis. Pray for their parents as well.

Javier y Rosita ministran a la gente Javier and Rosita minister to the people

It’s great to see how the people that have grown in the faith are now sharing the word of God in other areas. Here are some photos of a ministry that Javier and Rosita initiated. Javier and Rosita fellowshipped with us here in Lima until they moved to Puno because of a job opportunity. Here they are pictured sharing the true meaning of Christmas with the Aymara people in their neighborhood. They did it by sharing a cup of hot chocolate with some Peruvian fruit cake (a Peruvian Christmas tradition). Thanks for your faithfulness Lord. Thanks Javier and Rosita por sharing the photos and the experience with us.

1Pedro 1:1 1 Peter 1:1

1 Pedro 1:1

1 Peter 1:1
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
1 To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,[1]

Commentary
The Jewish Christians had become pilgrims in two senses of the word. They were pilgrims due to the dispersion and due to the fact that this world was no longer their home. As we study the Old Testament we see that God called Abram to leave his family, his city and his culture. In the New Testament we see that God dispersed the Christian Jews. The reason was that he wanted them to be witnesses in Judea, Samarian and to the uttermost parts of the world as well. We often attempt to find our security in our surroundings, our friends and everything that is familiar. God wants us to be challenged from time to time. He wants us to depend on Him and Him alone.

Application
God often uses disruptions, problems, circumstances to remind us that this world is not our home. In the same way that God called Abram, he is calling us out of our old way of life. He is calling us to a deeper relationship with Him. He is calling us on a mission as well. We are not our own. We have been bought with a price. What is God calling you to leave behind today? What is God calling you to? Don’t look at interruptions or a change of plans as being a set back. Realize that God will be working in your life. Trust Him as He moves you from one place to another and as He shows you that this world is not your home.

Gracias familia Thanks Family

On the way to Villa Maria

The musicians left the church on there way to Villa Maria to lead the worship for the adults. They were 8 people in total and so they couldn’t fit in one taxi. They decided to go en micro (a micro is a small bus used for transportation here in Peru.) After getting in the micro David took his guitar out of his case and began to play worship music joined by the singers and percussionists. They ended up praising the Lord en the micro y preaching to the people afterward. All of this on the way to the ministry! This year we really want to take the church out from the 4 walls of the building as much as possible. Thanks Lord. Thanks musicians for listening to the Lord’s voice.

Villa Maria

We love to minister in Villa Maria. We minister in the amphitheater at the main park. It was so nice to see all of the children learning the Bible yesterday. Seeing the adults listening attentively to the teaching of God’s word and knowing that a good number of them have already given their lives to the Lord is a real blessing. Thanks Koinonia family for sacrificing your time so that others can know Christ. Thanks also to those of you from the United States that are always praying for us and supporting us in so many ways as part of the team. Without your help this wouldn’t be possible.

Proverbs Proverbios

Proverbs 2:18-19
18 For her house leads down to death,
And her paths to the dead;
19 None who go to her return,
Nor do they regain the paths of life—
[1]

Proverbios 2:18-19
The context of this passage speaks to us of the dangers of sexual sin. Solomon tells us that the person that enters into sexual sin is going down a path that leads to death. He tells us that the person that enters into sexual sin will never return to the path that they were on before. How many of us can testify to the truth Solomon shares in these verses. Solomon paints a very different picture of the results of sexual sin than the world would have us believe. Few people today even consider the consequences of this all too common sin and therefore they are susceptible to the sin and its consequences. I am particularly concerned for our young people. I’m sure that you are aware that sexual activeness is now common among children that are 12-13 years old. Some start even younger.

Let’s consider the steps we must take personally today.

Take some time to read Proverbs letting God can remind you of the importance of fleeing sexual sin.
If you are being tempted with sexual sin, flee the temptation physically and emotionally. What do I mean? Don’t put yourself in situations where you can be tempted easily. When you are being tempted with or by a person… talk to someone and let them know what’s happening so that they can keep you in prayer and accountable. For example, when I’m in a store and the cashier flirts with me, I go home and tell my wife about it right away. Just telling my wife changes the dynamic of the situation.
Pray for our brothers and sisters regarding sexual temptation. Let’s pray thinking about the adolescents and pre-adolescents especially.
4. Consider the verses below. They speak of the person that obtains wisdom. With the verses mentioned previously, they speak of the person that obtains godly wisdom.

Proverbs 3:17-18
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who retain her.
[2]
Proverbios 3:17-18
Would you pray with us today that God would provide for a youth retreat for our church here in Peru? Youth retreats can be great opportunities for strengthening our young people’s faith and teaching them to maintain a Christian world view.

Some listen Algunos escuchan

One freguent complaint of pastors is that their sheep don´t pay attention. If you are a pastor that has this problem please come to minister in Peru. I have found that while the sheep don´t listen the alpacas are very attentive.

1 Corinthians 1:23 1 Corintios 1:23

1 Corinthians 1:23
23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,[1]

Colossians 2:6
6 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,[2]

1 Corintios 1:23
23 pero nosotros predicamos a Cristo crucificado, para los judíos ciertamente tropezadero, y para los gentiles locura;

Colosenses 2:6
Por tanto, de la manera que habéis recibido al Señor Jesucristo, andad en él;

The gospel is so simple. Jesus died for us and rose again the third day. He calls us to trust Him with our lives and for eternity. When we begin to trust Him with our lives we begin to love Him. Don’t forget that in the midst of all of our planning as church leaders and church members the most important thing has to remain the most important. Jesus died for us and gave us His grace. We received Christ Jesus as our Lord by grace through faith. Let’s continue to walk in that grace and live by faith today. If we remember this our life will continue to be simple. We can avoid a lot of confusion and a lot of stress.

Sunday mid day

We had a great time of worship this morning. The worship team is getting better every week. It´s so much better than the days when we listened to the same cd every Sunday. Thanks Lord and thanks worship team.
It was great to see a few new people show up too. One of the guys that we met in the park last night came to church. It was great to see him. Pray for him. His name is Hector.

Mediodia domingo

Pastor Brian

a great weekend un fin de semana fantastico

2:00 a.m. Satuday 7th of January
I was so tired but wide awake. I couldn´t sleep because I was so excited about our first discipleship school class that was to start in the morning. Lord, bless the students and prepare them for great things.

8:00 a.m. Saturday 7th of January
I realized I had a great problem. I had anticipated 6 or 7 students to arrive. Here it was 8:00 a.m. and we had 15 students all of them very excited and worshipping the Lord together. We would have to set up more tables and chairs. This is going to be fun I thought. Thank you Lord

1:00 in the afternoon.

Most of the students stayed at the church to eat lunch together. Many of them would be participating in the worship team practice at 2:30 or preparing the puppet show for the afternoon outreach in Villa Maria. It was so great seeing everyone eating together and hearing their laughter. This is why we named the church Koinonia (fellowship). There is nothing quite like the body of Christ when we get together in His love.

8:00 p.m.
We were finishing up the ministry in Villa Maria, approximately 1oo children heard a Bible story, saw a puppet show, sang christian songs and colored a picture of a Bible story. Between the time of the children´s ministry and the adult Bible study the mime team did two mimes. After the mime ministry, some members of the worship team led the adults in worship and then I taught from the gospel of John. Now the people of Koinonia were dispersed in the crowd witnessing to the people in small groups. It was great to see the people of the church praying with the people in the park. It was so nice to see Jose and Olga. They came with their Bibles and invited a neighbor. They became christians about 5 weeks ago right there in the park. The other Jose was there too. He became a christian three weeks ago... It´s been a full day of activity and a great day in the Spirit. Thanks Lord. We returned to the church. I took a shower and got ready to go the airport. Some cousins were arriving.

8:00 p.m.

Me gustó mucho ver a Jose y Olga. Llegaban unos primos

Summer in Lima El verano en Lima

January has arrived! It's getting hotter here in Peru. It's the time of year when the Limeños (the people from Lima) go to the beach. I know that for many of the people in the States it´s hard to believe that Pastor Brian has been taking the family to the beach on his day off. Several weeks in a row we have seen dolphins swimming just off shore. What a wonderful world the Lord has given us to enjoy. It´s so important to take a little time to enjoy our God´s creation with the family. What a great opportunity to build memories that will last a lifetime. Don´t miss out on the opportunity.

Psalm 69:9
9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up,
[1]
Salmo 69:9
B)

One of the things that I love about Jesus is His passion. He loved His Father and His people with a passion that made others misunderstand Him at times. It was that same passionate love that drew many to Him. Throughout history Christians that have changed their world have loved Jesus with a passion too. Mary Magdalene would be one example. 2000 years later the world remembers her passion for the Lord. Lord, fill us with a passion for you in 2006. It doesn’t matter if the people understand us all of the time. We really want to be your generation, the generation that seeks your face. Thanks for your passionate love for us.

A friend sent us this quote. I really liked it.
I ended my first book with the words 'no answer'.
I know now, Lord, why you utter no answer.
You are yourself the answer.
Before your face questions die away.
What other answer would suffice?
Only words, words; to be led out to battle against other words.
Long did I hate you, long did I fear you. "
'TIL WE HAVE FACES by C. S. Lewis

Una amiga nos citó lo siguiente. A mí, me gusta mucho.

Soldiers, Athletes and Farmers Soldados, Atletas y Labradores

This morning we had our weekly missionary meeting. We read 2 Timothy 2:3-6
You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.6 The hard-working farmer must be first to partake of the crops.[1]

We saw that as disciples we are called to be soldiers of Christ. Soldiers are always ready to fight but most importantly, a good soldier always submits to his leaders. He realizes that if his squadron is to win the battle they must be willing to work as a team following directions and orders at the time they are given.

Another example of what it means to be a disciple of Christ is to be like an athlete. A real athlete is willing to deny his own desires and sacrifice his body so that he can win the prize. He trains everyday. It should be the same with us a Christians.

The third example that Paul gives Timothy is that of a farmer. A farmer has to live by faith. He believes that sowing the seed will produce a harvest. If it were not so he would be better off eating the grain rather than sowing it. A farmer trusts the Lord for a harvest. A farmer needs patience. The harvest doesn’t come immediately, but it will come.

May we sow in faith and with patience. May we be willing to always obey our commander Jesus Christ. In the same way that an athlete is willing to sacrifice pleasures and discipline himself we are willing to do the same so that we will win the prize.

The Great Commission/Invitation La Gran Comisión/Invitación

Acts 5:14, 15
14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them.[1]

Reading these verses in my devotional time last year I realized something incredible. The people brought the sick out into the streets so that they could be healed. The people knew that they would find Peter in the streets. I believe that one of the reasons that they knew that they would find Peter in the streets was that Peter was always in the streets preaching the word of God. Imagine that! If the people wanted to find one of the main leaders of the church they had to go out into the street. How times have changed. Somehow in our modern Christianity we have changed the great commission into the great invitation. We invite people to come to our church so often and that’s not a bad thing but what would happen in our world if we would actually take the church to where the people are?
