"What's in a Name?"

"At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. The truth is, you can go directly to the Father and ask Him, and He will grant your request because you use my name. You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy."
John 16:23f
NLT

This statement comes at the end of Jesus' time with the disciples. It is a part of what is considered to be the lengthy discussion after the Last Supper, on the way to Gethsemane. To properly understand it, we must take into consideration the fact that it is spoken to a group of men who had left everything to follow Jesus.
The promise is echoed two previous times in the same discourse. In 14:13, Jesus encourages them to ask in order that He may bring glory to the Father. In 15:16 Jesus makes the same promise but in connection to bearing lasting fruit.
Asking "in Jesus name," is not a magical phrase we attach to the end of our selfish prayers. It is the pronouncement that we are in full allegiance with Him, having left everything, seeking glory only for the Father and longing to bear lasting fruit for His kingdom.

¿Que hay en un nombre?

Juan 16:23
