Empeine The Scab

¿Estás dejando a Dios hablarte y limpiarte?

‘For any man who has a defect shall not approach: a man blind or lame, who has a marred face or any limb too long, a man who has a broken foot or broken hand, or is a hunchback or a dwarf, or a man who has a defect in his eye, or eczema or scab, or is a eunuch. No man of the descendants of Aaron the priest, who has a defect, shall come near to offer the offerings made by fire to the Lord. He has a defect; he shall not come near to offer the bread of his God.

Leviticus 21:18-21

Today we’re going to continue talking about some of the things in the Bible that are kind of nasty. Last week we talked about the person that suffered from eczema and I explained why they couldn’t serve in the ministry. This time we’re going to talk about the person that has a scab. I did a little research and found that it’s really talking about the person that has impetigo or a related infection; the person that has a bacterial infection that causes an outbreak on the skin. I grew up in Florida, in the United States. It was an area that had a lot of plants and animals and we very tropical. My friends and I had impetigo once and a while. We played in the dirt every day and returned to our houses just as filthy as can be. I got home so dirty that I can remember my mother making me wash myself outside with a hose before entering the house. It was embarrassing but I survived!

The bacterium that causes impetigo can be found in a lot of places. To prevent it from entering the body and doing harm, it’s important to keep the body clean. After contracting the bacteria, it should be treated with antibiotics. It is contagious.

After seeing the photo above, I don’t think anyone needs to ask why a person with impetigo was not permitted to serve in the ministry. No one would like to work along side of a person with an infection like impetigo! If they were permitted to work they could end up infecting everyone and then no one would be working. The priest with impetigo would be sending out a message. He would be saying that the priests were dirty and that they didn’t bathe themselves like they were supposed to. That’s important because the Old Testament required the priest to bathe before performing their duties. God puts a lot of emphasis on purity and cleanliness. He doesn’t want His people contaminated.

Now we get to the application for our times. Ministers of the gospel must be clean in the outward areas of their lives and inwardly as well. A few years ago I met with a missionary that has been serving the Lord for many years here in Peru. I wanted to hear his counsel and I asked him, “What is your counsel for me as a new missionary?” He said, “Be holy, because there are a lot of missionaries and pastors that aren’t. Many have been bad examples for the people. I think he was right. Being holy doesn’t have to do with maintaining a holy outward appearance and just leaving it at that. It has to do with having an undivided and pure heart before God. So many times we forget that our most important goal isn’t to win souls for Christ. It’s not to have a big church or a successful ministry. The goal is pleasing God. The same God that sees what’s in the deep places in our heart is the God that is concerned about spiritual impetigo. As time goes by, that ugly infection inside will work it’s way out.

Sometimes the problem isn’t an obvious sin. We would have dealt with that right away. It’s an attitude that isn’t pleasing to the Lord. We don’t want to serve others any longer. We want to be served. We don’t even think about others anymore. We think of ourselves first. Instead of talking about things that are edifying, we poke fun of others, we gossip and we talk about ugly things.

The last night of Jesus earthly life, He took off His clothing and began to wash the disciples’ feet. He explained that it wasn’t necessary to wash the whole body. Washing the feet would be enough. They had been walking in the world. Due to their walk, their feet were dirty. This is how we must begin; allowing Jesus to wash our feet when we’ve been walking in the world. If we’re not completely clean, it won’t be long before we’ll have those bacteria inside.

If we compare the eczema problem with the impetigo problem, we see that the difference is that the eczema is due to a dry skin and we need the Holy Spirit to minister to us. We need Him to apply the oil to our skin so that it can be made soft again. In the case of the impetigo, the problem is caused by the surroundings. What wants to get into our body without us even knowing it. The solution is to keep clean. In Ephesians 5:26, the Apostle Paul talks about the washing of water by the word so we see that it’s important to use God’s word to get all of that dirt off and keep ourselves clean. How are you doing in the word? Are you allowing God to wash you. The word cleans us, acting as a preventative medicine but it works as a great antibiotic for those who have been infected as well.
