Esperé yo a Jehová, esperó mi alma; En su palabra he esperado.

John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

If you’ve been serving the Lord faithfully for any amount of time you can verify that Jesus words are true. As Christians we face the daily problems that come from living in a fallen world and being fallen creatures. In addition we face the attacks of the enemy. I don’t know about you but my opinion is, if you don’t have enemies it’s because you’re not really serving the Lord with all of your heart. I praise the Lord for my friends because I have many, but I also have many enemies. At times it’s hard to balance the command of the Lord to love our enemies with the prayers that we find in the Bible against them. Psalm 10 for example says, “Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man; Seek out his wickedness until You find none.”[1]

Some would say that we must remember that the man that is against us is not our enemy. Our enemy is Satan. I believe that that is true but it seems to me to be an over simplification of the issue. I have seen that Satan is the one behind so many of the problems in the world but I’ve also seen men that are so completely given over to Satan that they are being manipulated by him like puppets. Some of them have done things that are far beyond their human intelligence. They are more than happy to be part of a work that rebels against God and seeks to destroy everything that God is doing in this world.

I don’t have all of the answers yet. I’m just a human being. I do appreciate the Psalm that I posted yesterday though, Psalm 130. When I’m being attacked by the enemy I try to remember verses 3-6. They say, “If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope. My soul waits for the Lord More than those who watch for the morning—Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.”[2]

The first thing that I have to remember when I’m being attacked is that my relationship with the Lord is based on His mercy and forgiveness. I don’t ask for the Lord to rescue me or defend me because I’ve always done the right thing. I ask for His help because I know that I’m His child and that He loves me. When He delivers me I learn to trust and fear Him more.

The second thing that I try to remember when being attacked is that God allows moments like this so that I will learn to wait on Him. To seek Him is a blessing. The Psalmist mentions that his soul waits on the Lord. The soul speaks of our will. It is a decision that we make to wait on the Lord. The soul speaks of our emotions. I pour out my emotions to the Lord so that I can receive His peace and joy in the midst of the attack. He comforts me and strengthens me in the area of my will and my emotions. This is the only way to keep from allowing resentment, bitterness and even hatred get a foothold in our hearts. This is the only way to keep from falling into the sin of worry. Worry can do so much damage to our relationship with the Lord and those around us.

The third thing I try to remember is that I hope in His word. When we are being attacked by the enemy our tendency, if we’re not careful is to try to solve everything ourselves or go to the extreme of seeking help from anyone and everyone. We take things into our own hands and react instead of act. We need at act according to God’s word. Hoping in His word means more than just reading the Bible and putting Biblical principles into action during the attack. It means allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us and minister to us through the Word. He knows exactly what passage you need to hear and understand. He knows when you need to pray so that you can love your enemies and when you need to pray that God will break their arms. In the middle of the attack, make sure that you take time to listen to His word.

Pastor Brian,

Thank you for what you shared here. I was convicted, encouraged, and blessed. It is so easy for us to lose sight of our God and His wonderful promises in the dealings with ourselves, the enemy, and the world. Love you. I have been praying for you all.

Chris,

Thanks for writing. Thanks for praying for us too. God has been so good in putting us on the hearts of His people while we've been being stretched. Thanks for your blog too. It's always a blessing to read what the Lord is putting on your heart.
God bless you man.
