Al inicio del siglo XIX, Adam Clarke describió la situación de su tiempo, pero hoy suena como si fuera más verdadera aun. “Esta es la característica más alarmante de la ciudad de Londres en el tiempo presente. Las ansias por las noticias, que por lo general exponen una mente mundana, poco profunda e indecisa, son increíblemente frecuentes. Incluso los ministros del evangelio, negligentes respecto de su sagrada función, en cierto sentido se han convertido en atenienses. De modo tal que el libro de Dios no se lee ni estudia con la mitad de interés que el periódico… Por ello, no resulta sorprendente que tales ministros lleguen a ser predicadores de la política ni que sus sermones no sean más que cáscaras para los chanchos. Ante ellos las ovejas permanecen hambrientas, sin recibir ningún alimento.

In the early nineteenth century, Adam Clarke described the situation of his day, and it sounds like it is even more true of our own time. “This is a striking feature of the city of London in the present day. The itch for news, which generally argues a worldly, shallow, or unsettled mind, is wonderfully prevalent: even ministers of the Gospel, negligent of their sacred function, are become in this sense Athenians; so that the book of God is neither read nor studied with half the avidity and spirit as a newspaper . . . It is no wonder if such become political preachers, and their sermons be no better than husks for swine. To such the hungry sheep look up, and are not fed.”
