The Gospel El Evangelio

If man makes a gospel—and he is very fond of doing it, like children making toys—what does he do? He is very pleased with it for a few moments, and then he pulls it to pieces, and makes it up in another way; and this continually.

The religions of modern thought are as changeable as the mists on the mountains. See how often science has altered its very basis! Science is notorious for being most scientific in destruction of all the science that has gone before it. I have sometimes indulged myself, in leisure moments, in reading ancient natural history, and nothing can be more comic. Yet this is by no means an abstruse science.

In twenty years time, some of us may probably find great amusement in the serious scientific teaching of the present hour, even as we do now in the systems of the last century. It may happen that, in a little time, the doctrine of evolution will be the standing jest of schoolboys.

The like is true of the modern divinity which bows its knee in blind idolatry of so-called science. Now we say, and do so with all our heart, that the gospel which we preached forty years ago we will still preach in forty years time if we are alive. And, what is more, that the gospel which was taught of our Lord and his apostles is the only gospel now on the face of the earth.

Ecclesiastics have altered the gospel, and if it had not been of God it would have been stifled by falsehood long ago; but because the Lord has made it, it abideth for ever. Everything human is before long moon-struck, so that it shifts with every phase of the lunar orb; but the Word of the Lord is not after men, for it is the same yesterday, today, and for ever.

Si el hombre hace un evangelio-y le gusta hacerlo como a los niños les gusta hacer juguetes-¿Qué hacen? Le agrada lo que ha hecho por unos poco momentos y luego lo rompe en pedazos, y lo hace en una manera diferente después. Y así lo hace constantemente.

Las religiones hechas según nuestra moderna forma de pensar son inconstantes como la neblina en las montañas. Vemos con que frecuencia la ciencia ha alterado sus bases fundamentales. La ciencia es notoria por ser muy científico en la destrucción de toda la ciencia anterior. A veces me he dado el capricho, en mis tiempos libres de leer la historia natural de la antigüedad y nada es más gracioso. Pero no es en ninguna manera una ciencia inasequible.

En veinte años algunos de nosotros encontraremos mucha diversión en la enseñanza seria de la ciencia de hoy día como lo hacemos hoy cuando hablamos de la ciencia del siglo pasado. Tal vez pasará que la doctrina de la evolución será una broma común y corriente de los estudiantes en los colegios.

Es la misma verdad cuando hablamos de la divinidad moderna que se postra en una idolatría ciega a lo que se llama la ciencia de hoy. Ahora decimos con todo nuestro corazón que el evangelio que hemos predicado atravez de los últimos 40 años es el mismo evangelio que predicaremos los próximos 40 años si seguimos vivos. Es más, el evangelio que fue enseñado por nuestro Señor y sus apóstoles es el único evangelio ahora en la faz de la tierra.

Los eclesiásticos han cambiado el evangelio y si no fuera por Dios hubiese sido sofocado por la falsedad hace tiempo; pero el Señor lo ha hecho y por eso permanecerá por siempre. Todo lo que proviene del ser humano es chiflado y así cambia con cada fase del orbe de la luna; pero la palabra del Señor no es del hombre y es igual ayer, hoy y para siempre.
