The Praise of Men La Gloria de los Hombres

John 12:43 “ for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.[1]”

Yesterday I was talking about the false prophets in Micah’s time. They were proclaiming peace when there was to be no peace. God had planned destruction. I mentioned the fact that we are to seek God’s glory and not fear man. So many times we think that we’re really seeking God’s glory by being really patient with a person’s sin when God has already shown us that we have to speak lovingly and firmly with them. We should be speaking with them about repentance instead of peace. Maybe the false prophets prophesied peace because that was what they wanted. Everybody wants peace. Why stir things up? Let’s just hope that the problem will go away all by itself.
Sometimes fearing men instead of fearing God involves worrying about what the impact of our confronting sin will have on the church body. We think that maybe it will be a real downer. Again we see that our focus isn’t in God’s glory. We’re not worried about what God’s opinion is; we’re worried about the people.
Obviously I’m not talking about acting in an unloving way. As we study the prophets we see that they were men that were hard on sin but men of soft hearts. They wept for the people. They took the burden of the people’s sin on themselves but they refused to deny the message that God had called them to proclaim. May we weep for the sins of the people rather than ignore them. May we call people to repentance and hope rather than contaminate them with a watered down message that is incapable of making real change.

Porque amaban más la gloria de los hombres que la gloria de Dios.

Ayer hablé de los falsos profetas en el tiempo de Miqueas. Estaban proclamando la paz cuando no iba a haber paz. Dios ya tenía planeado la destrucción. Mencioné el hecho de que debemos buscar la gloria de Dios y no temer al hombre. Muchas veces pensamos que realmente estamos buscando la gloria de Dios siendo muy pacientes con la persona en pecado cuando Dios ya nos ha mostrado que tenemos que hablarle con mucho amor y firmeza. Deberíamos hablarle de arrepentimiento en ves de la paz. Tal ves los profetas profetizaban la paz porque era lo que ellos querían. Tal ves pensaban que era preferible ignorar el problema y esperar que desapareciera.
A veces temer al hombre en ves de temer a Dios significa preocuparnos por el impacto que confrontar el pecado tendrá en la iglesia. Por ejemplo, si le hablo a la persona de su pecado, tal ves se va y con él/ella se van otros también. Pensamos que confrontar el pecado va a deprimir a la gente. Otra vez, nuestro enfoque ya no está en la gloria de Dios. No estamos preocupados por lo que opina Dios sino, la gente.
Obviamente no estoy hablando de actuar en una manera que no demuestra el amor. Cuando estudiamos los profetas vemos que eran hombres que eran duros en cuanto al pecado pero también tenían corazones suaves. Ellos lloraban por la gente. Tomaron la carga del pecado en si mismos pero nunca rehusaron negar el mensaje que Dios les había llamado a proclamar. Lloremos por los pecados de la gente en ves de ignorarlos. Llamemos a la gente al arrepentimiento y esperanza en ves de contaminarle con un mensaje tan en suavizado que es incapaz de hacer un cambio real.
