De Mañana. In the Morning

“Esperé yo a Jehová, esperó mi alma; En su palabra he esperado.

Salmo 5:3

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
And in His word I do hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
More than those who watch for the morning—
Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.

Psalm 130:5-6

My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord;
In the morning I will direct it to You,
And I will look up.

Psalm 5:3

El Aniversario. The Anniversary

Lima Peru desde San Cristobal.
Lima Peru from San Cristobal.

We came to Peru as missionaries nine years ago yesterday. We didn’t really know what to expect of course and the first night we were so depressed and excited all at the same time. We arrived with our son Marco and we didn’t know hardly anyone in Lima at the time. Now we have our daughters as well. God has given us the different ministries and the different places where we minister and we’re seeing how He has been working in a beautiful way in the church God has been so faithful. There is so much more to do yet and we excited to see what He will do in the years to come.

La Vida Llena. The Full Life

I’m not writing anything in the blog these days because I’ve been meditating on something and I looking for the way to put it down on paper. It’s giving me a little trouble because I don’t want it to be too long. It has to do with John the Baptist. God willing, I’ll have it done in a few days. In the mean time I’ll keep putting some great things that others have said. They’re better than what I have to say anyway. Thanks for your understanding.

¿Soy Inflamable? Am I Ignitable?

Jim Elliot.

"And of the angels He says: Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire."
Hebrews 1:7

He makes His ministers a flame of fire. Am I ignitible? God deliver me from the dread asbestos of 'other things.' Saturate me with the oil of the Spirit that I may be aflame. But flame is transient, often short lived. Canst thou bear this, my soul - short life? ... Make me thy fuel, Flame of God. Jim Elliot

Los Misioneros. The Missionaries

Jim Elliot.

You wonder why people choose fields away from the States when young people at home are drifting because no one wants to take time to listen to their problems. Ill tell you why I left. Because those Stateside young people have every opportunity to study, hear, and understand the Word of God in their own language, and these Indians have no opportunity whatsoever. I have had to make a cross of two logs, and lie down on it, to show the Indians what it means to crucify a man. When there is that much ignorance over here and so much knowledge and opportunity over there, I have no question in my mind why God sent me here. Those whimpering Stateside young people will wake up on the Day of Judgment condemned to worse fates than these demon-fearing Indians, because, having a Bible, they were bored with it---while these never heard of such a thing as writing."

En Toda Ocasión. In Everything

Hudson Taylor

Many times we just read through a verse of the Bible so quickly without taking the time to meditate on particular phrases. A lot of the phrases in the Bible are real gems. When you take them by themselves, they are really wonderful and when you put them together with the phrases that make up their context they become a beautiful piece of jewelry. Applying these jewels to our lives will make our gifts to the Lord an acceptable and holy sacrifice to the Lord.

I’m meditating on a phrase from Philippians 4:6 today. The whole verse says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;”
[1] The phrase that I’m asking the Lord to make more of a reality in my life is, “in everything by prayer”.

Here are some quotes from Christians of the past regarding prayer…

The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, and prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray. Samuel Chadwick

Angie Al Campo Misionero. Angie To The Mission Field

Pray for Angie. She’ll be traveling to Israel today with a group from the Calvary Chapel Bible Collage here in Lima. They’ll be ministering to the people there that speak Spanish and will try to minister to some Arabs as well. After returning from Israel in a few weeks, Angie will be working on getting her visas to travel to Germany and then on the India. God willing, she’ll go to Germany for two weeks of training in September, and then will be on her way to India to work as a missionary for an undetermined time. Pray that Angie will be able to raise the support she needs. Like all of us, as a missionary, she will be living by faith because she will not be permitted to work in India.

¡Que Tengas Un Buen Día! Have a Good Day!

A.B. Simpson

How may we enjoy this day? This enjoyment will never come by trying to be happy, yet there are conditions which, if met, will produce real joy.

1. Be right with God, for gladness is sown for the upright in heart (Psalm 97:11). It is His joy that remains in us that makes our joy full.
2. Forget yourself and live for others, for It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).
3. When you cannot rejoice in feelings, circumstances or conditions, rejoice in the Lord (Philippians 4:4), and count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations (James 1:2).
4. Finally, obey the Lord and be faithful to your trust, and again and again His blessed Spirit will whisper to your heart, Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy lord (Matthew 25:21).

Soportándoos. Bearing With One Another

“bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” [1]
Colossians 3:13

A week ago I came out of my bedroom with a button down shirt on and my 5 year old daughter Priscilla saw me and asked, “Where are you going?” You have to understand something about me. Whenever I’m in the house I have a t-shirt on. I’m not a formal person at all and my children know it. The fact that I put a different shirt on means I’m going somewhere. Now we’ve been talking about the fact that God calls us as new creatures in Christ, to put off the old man and then put on the new. It’s important to remember that in this verse because otherwise we’ll decide to just stay home with that old t-shirt on. If we’re not going anywhere, putting on the new clothes would just be a pain in the neck sometimes. We would rather not do it. Praise the Lord, He’s taking us somewhere! We have a reason to get all dressed up! Let’s see what our next piece of clothing is
…
When we read that we are to bear with one another many of us have the idea that we have to put up with the person that is unbearable. We do things like count to 10 before we speak, we go to the bathroom to wash our face instead of screaming, etc. The word bearing here is anechomai in the Greek and it means to hold up or to sustain, to bear, to endure. It means that at times we will definitely have to endure or put up with other people that are difficult. It’s also important to remember something else though. God uses certain difficult people in my life to remind me how much God loves me and how far I have to go yet.

I call on Him to give me His love because I can’t love that person on my own. I am almost forced to depend on the Lord on a constant basis, and that’s good. We see here though that the idea is more than just putting up with someone. The idea is actually to hold up that person, to sustain them. That takes us to a whole different level. We’re not just gritting our teeth and hoping that the person will leave, we’re actually doing something positive. We’re doing something on behalf of that difficult person. In Ephesians 4:2 Paul says,
“bearing with one another in love,” and we all know that love isn’t just an attitude, it’s action. It’s not easy, but as I mentioned before, starting in verse twelve, Paul is talking about the fruit of the Spirit here. This is something that God desires to produce in our lives.

The “secret” to being able to see this in our own lives is abiding in Christ. If we abide in Christ, and His words abide in us, we will bear much fruit. When you’re struggling in this area, it may just well be that God is calling you so the secret place where He wishes to teach you things about Him and about yourself that you haven’t realized yet. So we see that bearing with another is an opportunity. Don´t forget that in bearing with another person, we’re actually putting on one more piece of clothing that will allow us to be

La Paciencia. Longsuffering

“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;”
Colossians 3:12

A pastor that I know from California was here in Peru recently and he asked me about how things are going at the church. I told him that I was very excited because we’re really seeking the Lord in prayer a lot more as individuals and as a church. I know that a number of the men are getting up extra early to spend time in prayer. I’ve heard that even some of the children are seeking the Lord early. That is one of the signs of a healthy church. My friend told me, “Enjoy those times of refreshing because it’s not always that way”. I know that he’s right, but one of the things that I hope that we will learn as individuals and as a church is the next item on the list of things we’re instructed to put on as Christians. It’s called longsuffering but is also known as patience.

Paul starts Colossians 3 telling us that we are to seek the things which are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father. We’re learning to set our minds on things above and not on the things of this earth because our life is hidden with Christ in God. To do it means many things but if it means anything, it certainly means to view our walk with the Lord as a walk. We’re not sprinting. We’re walking. We realize that God is working in our lives a little bit at a time. With that in mind we have to have patience as we spend time in prayer and God’s word, He will do a deep work in us. Longsuffering or patience speaks of being constant or steadfast. So many Christians start of well in their relationship with the Lord. So many begin to pray, but due to the obstacles in the way, they give in to a mediocre Christianity. Don’t be like that. To help us, here are some areas that the Bible tells us that we are to steadfast in.

Proverbs 4:23 says,
“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life”.
[1] Don’t let your heart get attracted to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes or the pride of life. If the Lord has your heart, he has all of you. That’s the only way to start.

1 Corinthians 15:58 says,
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord”. When we first begin to minister we’re so excited. We have such expectation but as time goes on we can get tired, bored, or even tempted to abandon the work. What’s the answer? Some would say that we just have to keep on. There is a time for that, but Paul tells us that the real problem isn’t the work. In fact, Paul doesn’t say that we have to have abundant work. He says that we are to abound in the work. The real issue is being steadfast and immovable as people. As we are grounded daily in Christ and His word we will have the ability to continue on. It won’t matter what obstacles we have to face. God will bring refreshment to our souls as we seek Him. We will then abound in the work, and that’s very different from having abundant work.

Colossians 1:23 says,
“If indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard…”
[2] Let’s not forget the hope we have in the simple gospel of Jesus Christ. There are so many cults and false prophets these days and there desire is to complicate things and make us forget our blessed hope in Christ. Don’t forget to keep the focus on Christ.

Hebrews 6:18,19 speak of hope too but the emphasis is a little different, it says,
“we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil”.
[4] And so we see here that this is a hope that affects our emotional state, our perspective and our will because the hope that we have is Christ is an anchor. We know that we can enter into God’s presence at any moment and receive His strength and His forgiveness. Our God continues to be the great “I Am,” the God that is able to meet our need.

1 Peter 5:9 talks about the times when we have to face the onslaught of the devil and the times we must suffer. It says,
“Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world”.
[5] And so we see here that we are to be steadfast in our resistance to the devil and steadfast in our sufferings. Faith is so important in moments like this. Why? Because Hebrews 11 explains that, “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”. [6] Hebrews 12 goes on to say, “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls”. [7] Jesus is our example, and in moments like these, when we face the attacks of the enemy and times of suffering, He’s also our older brother.

Delante del Trono. Before the Throne

“…so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints”. [1]
1 Thessalonians 3:13

Have you ever wondered what it will be like to stand before God for the first time as He’s seated on His throne? As God’s children, we have the assurance that we will not be ashamed that day. We will be going home to our Father as prodigal sons. He will receive us with all the love that He has. Jesus has already paid the penalty for our sins. We have been completely forgiven by His blood. The day we stand before our Father will not be a terrible day. It will be the best day we have ever experienced. That day we will understand what Jesus did for us on the cross like we’ve never understood it before. It will be great to be completely holy, strong and blameless.

Canta, Los Andes Perú. Canta, Andes Mountains Peru

I took this photo in Obrajillo, near Canta

We´re back from Canta. We had a nice time there. I have a dream of putting a missionary base in the area to be able to reach out to the people in the mountains of Lima with the gospel. There are a lot of little towns that don´t have a Christian church yet. Would you pray with me about this?

Las Ovejas. The Sheep

This picture is of Ana and Priscilla with the sheep. It reminds me of the time I saw a shepherd returning from the fields with about 3o sheep. He opened the front door of his house and the 30 sheep went right in! I saw that once in Canta too. A shepherd is never far from his sheep. The Lord is our shepherd

Los Caballos. The Horses

A trip to Canta isn´t complete without a horseback ride. At least that´s what Marco thinks.

El Puente de Piedras. The Bridge of Stones

El Puente fue construido por los Incas. Aquí estamos encima.
The Bridge was built by the Incas. Here we are on top.

El Agua Del Rio. The River Water

¡Estaba helada!

Anna and Marco put their feet in the water. It was cold!

Se Vende Un Terreno. A Piece of Land for Sale

We found a piece of land for sale. I took these pictures to remember the telephone number. The for sale sign is a rock with the number painted on it. Can you read the numbers?

El Campo Verde. The Green Countryside

We took this picture on the way to a little town we wanted to visit. We asked a young woman that was walking along, "How much farther to the next town?" She told us, "twenty minutes" with her quechua accent. We drove for about 40 minutes when we came upon an old man and we asked him how much farther it was to the next town. He told us, "about 30 minutes in car." The people of the countryside don´t use watches and so it´s almost a waste of time to even ask how much longer. The one nice thing about it is that it does give you good memories and the people are awesome. "Click" on the picture to see it better. The countryside here is beautiful.
