Estoy leyendo los comentarios de Donald Grey Barnhouse sobre la epístola a los Romanos. Son muy buenos y los disfruto mucho. Aquí transcribo uno de ellos sobre Romanos 1:18.

Por su naturaleza, los hombres son objeto de la ira, lo cual significa que naturalmente merecen toda la ira de Dios. La cruz ha revelado esta ira, y los juicios que habrán de venir sobre el mundo nacen de la muerte de nuestro Salvador.

La obra consumada en el altar es el sacrificio por los pecados. Ese es el lugar de la sangre. Pero en el fin de los tiempos, el día de la gracia habrá terminado y llegará el del juicio. Entonces, los hombres que hayan rechazado la sangre del altar tendrán que recibir fuego de él. Eso lo vemos al recordar lo que ocurrió el primer día en que se rindió culto en el altar, bajo la ley de Moisés: Dios mismo fue quien prendió el fuego que consumió el cuerpo del cordero. Lo cual equivale a decir que si no quieres a Jesucristo como tu Salvador, debes tenerlo como juez. Y es que es absolutamente cierto que tanto la gracia como la ira proceden de la cruz de Jesucristo. Su justicia y su ira son igualmente reveladas en las buenas nuevas.

I’ve really been enjoying Donald Grey Barnhouse’s commentary on the book or Romans. Here are a few quotes from him on Romans 1:18

Men are by nature the children of wrath, which means that they naturally deserve all of the wrath of God. The cross has revealed that wrath, and the judgments that will come upon the world flow from the death of the Savior.

The appointed work done at the altar is the sacrifice for sins: There is the place of the blood. But at the end of time, it is seen that the day of grace is ended and the day of judgment has arrived. Men have refused the blood of the altar, so they must have the fire from the altar. And when it is remembered that on the very first day of worship under the Mosaic law, God himself lighted the fire that consumed the body of the lamb, it is equivalent of saying: If you will not have Jesus Christ as your Savior, you must have Him as your Judge. It is the truth that both grace and wrath proceed from the cross of Jesus Christ, that both righteousness and wrath are revealed in the gospel.

La obra consumada en el altar constituye el sacrificio por los pecados y el lugar de la sangre. Pero al final del tiempo, acabará el día de gracia y llegará el del juicio. Y los hombres que hayan rechazado la sangre del altar recibirán fuego de él. Como sucedió el primer día de alabanza bajo la ley mosaica, cuando Dios mismo prendió el fuego que consumió el cuerpo del cordero. Lo cual equivale a decir: si no tienes a Jesucristo como salvador, lo tendrás como juez. Es verdad que tanto la gracia como la ira proceden de la cruz de Jesucristo, así como la justicia y la ira son reveladas en el evangelio.

La gente que enseña que Dios es amor sin enseñar que Dios también es el odio al pecado, tiene en realidad a otros dios que es Satanás con una máscara puesta. Dile "No" al Espantapájaros. Just say "No" to the Scarecrow

Es algo sorprendente que algunos se avergüenzan del evangelio. Pero hay gente que se avergüenza de cualquier posición que demanda una muestra de denuedo. Llamamos a estas personas cobardes. Temen a lo que la gente podría pensar. Hay palabras en el idioma que no significan nada para mí y a muchas otras personas, pero estas palabras causan pánico a los espíritus tímidos. Las palabras así representan, de verdad, los árbitros entre la vida y la muerte para los tímidos y temerosos. Estas personas temen a “la opinión”, “la sociedad”, “el precedente”, “la costumbre” y palabras así. Las palabras de esta clase son espantapájaros que el campesino ha puesto en el campo, y las palabras espantapájaros no causan terror para nosotros en ninguna manera. No entendemos a la persona que se postra ante la costumbre, la sociedad, o a la opinión del público. Es como estuviera escondido en un rincón, tapándose la cara de horror, para evitar que el espanta pájaros le tire un palo torcido que el campesino ha puesto debajo de su brazo. Aún, para alguna gente el terror de las opiniones del público y la condenación del público es real. Que cada alma temerosa mire la transformación de Pedro. La vergüenza y la cobardía, cambiado por el orgullo del Señor y la valentía hasta la muerte en proclamar Su evangelio. It is a thing of wonder that some would be ashamed of the gospel. Yet there are people who are ashamed of any position that demands a show of boldness. We call such people cowards. They are afraid of what some people are going to think. There are some words in the language, which mean nothing at all to me and to many others, but which are utterly frightening to timid spirits. Such words represent indeed, the arbiters of life and death to the shy and timorous souls. These people are afraid of “opinion”, “society”, “convention”, “the world”, “precedent”, “custom”, and the like. Such words are to some of us scarecrows which a farmer has set up in his field, and these scarecrow words have no terror for us at all. And we can no more understand a person who bows before custom, society and public opinion than we could understand his huddling into a corner and covering his face with horror lest the scarecrow shoot him with a bent stick which the farmer has stuck under his arm. Yet there are people to whom the terrors of public opinions and public condemnation are real. Let every timorous soul look at the transformation in Peter from shame and cowardice to pride in His Lord and boldness unto death in the proclamation of His gospel. And let us realize that it is only the Holy Spirit who gives the strength that turns timid people into heroes and cowards into martyrs. “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation…” Romans 1:16
