Last week we had a group of men that went to minister in Puente Piedra. Not a single woman went with us. Today the whole worship team was comprised of men. It wasn’t that long ago that we only had two men ministering with a group of women. We’re not up to 400 men yet and we have a lot to learn but thanks for the start Lord. It’s good to see the men stepping forward.

Hace no mucho tiempo teníamos solo 2 hombres ministrando con el grupo de mujeres. No hemos llegado a 400 hombres y tenemos mucho que aprender pero gracias Señor por haber comenzado. Es bueno ver a los hombres tomando un paso adelante.

The Body El Cuerpo
Romans 12:4-6For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them:[1]
Last week José, J.P. and I went to the hardware store to buy some materials. We were planning how to put the new lights into the meeting room for the church (for more religious types this would be known as the sanctuary). After seeing what was available José and I realized that our idea wouldn’t work. There we were scratching our heads. I was really wondering. That was when I told J. P,. in English what we José and I had been talking about in Spanish. He came up with several options in about 2 minute’s time. I was so glad he was there. God really used his ideas. Thanks Lord and thanks J.P.!
Another story from last week… Right in the place where we will have the entrance to the church there is an underground water tank. The tank is very important but it is in the way. We can’t move it and it has a curb that rises about 4 inches above the floor. We were all set to build a wood box and put potted plants on top to make it look nice. Everyone was in agreement until Carlos Gallo showed up. I was explaining the plans for the entrance way when he suggested something. Why not just make the water tank level to the floor and put something over it. That way we will have more space and it will look better. Of course it was obvious after he mentioned it. Why hadn’t we seen it before? Thanks Lord and thanks Carlos.
We are all part of the body and we’re all needed. Some just have the perfect idea when the rest of us are struggling. You may not think that you’re very important to the church but how do you know that? We didn’t know what we were missing until J.P. and Carlos came along. Be open to sharing what you have with others in the body. It will be great for them and good for you. Don’t wait for a pastor or leader to tell you what to do. Pray about how you can contribute and then talk to someone in the church about your idea. It may be just what the church needs. The best part is that they may not even know that they need it yet. They can’t see everything you’re seeing.

La semana pasada José, Pastor J.P. y yo fuimos a la ferretería para comprar materiales. Estábamos planeando como poner las luces nuevas en el salón de reuniones para la iglesia (en algunas iglesias se llama el santuario.) Después de ver lo que estaba a nuestra disposición José y yo vimos que nuestra idea no iba a ser posible. Allí estábamos rasgándonos las cabezas. Yo estaba realmente preguntándome a mi mismo como podría ser. No sabíamos que hacer. Luego le expliqué a J.P. el problema en ingles. En 2 minutos o menos nos dio varias opciones. Yo estaba tan contento que J.P. había ido con nosotros. Dios utilizó sus ideas mucho. Gracias Señor y gracias J.P.
Otra historia de la semana pasada… En el lugar que va a ser el ingreso a la iglesia hay una cisterna de agua debajo del piso. La cisterna es muy importante pero está en un lugar muy malo. No podemos ponerla al otro lado y tiene un borde mas o menos 6 pulgadas mas alto que el piso. Estábamos listos a construir una caja de madera bien bonita para taparla. Pensamos en poner plantas con macetas encima para hacer todo bien bonito. Todos estábamos de acuerdo hasta que llegó Carlos Gallo. Yo le estaba explicando como iba a ser, todos los planes que teníamos para el ingreso a la iglesia etc. Cuando me sugirió algo. ¿Por qué no nivelan el estanque? Así podrían tener mas espacio y va a ser mas bonito. ¡Por supuesto! Era tan obvio. ¿Por que no lo vimos antes? Gracias Señor y gracias Carlitos.
Todos formamos parte del cuerpo de Cristo y todos somos útiles en su reino. Algunos tienen la idea perfecta cuando los demás estamos luchando. Tal vez piensas que no eres importante para la iglesia pero, ¿Cómo sabes? No sabíamos que nos faltaba algo más hasta que llegaron J.P. y Carlos. Es importante estar dispuesto a compartir tus ideas y sugerencias. Es importante colaborar. Es bueno para ti y es bueno para los demás también. No esperes que un pastor o un líder te diga lo que tienes que hacer. Es mejor orar y pedirle a Dios para que te indique lo que él quiere que hagas. Después de hablar con Dios podrás hablar con los líderes de tu iglesia acerca de tu idea. Quizás es exactamente lo que la iglesia necesita. Lo mejor es que tal vez los líderes ni saben todavía que tu idea es lo que hace falta. No pueden ver todo lo que ves.

This statement comes at the end of Jesus' time with the disciples. It is a part of what is considered to be the lengthy discussion after the Last Supper, on the way to Gethsemane. To properly understand it, we must take into consideration the fact that it is spoken to a group of men who had left everything to follow Jesus.
The promise is echoed two previous times in the same discourse. In 14:13, Jesus encourages them to ask in order that He may bring glory to the Father. In 15:16 Jesus makes the same promise but in connection to bearing lasting fruit.
Asking "in Jesus name," is not a magical phrase we attach to the end of our selfish prayers. It is the pronouncement that we are in full allegiance with Him, having left everything, seeking glory only for the Father and longing to bear lasting fruit for His kingdom.

¿Que hay en un nombre?

En aquel día no me preguntaréis nada. De cierto, de cierto os digo, que todo cuanto pidiereis al Padre en mi nombre, os lo dará.
Esta declaración viene después del tiempo que tuvo Jesús con sus discípulos. Es una parte de lo que es considerado una discusión larga después de la última cena, rumbo a Getsemaní. Para entenderlo correctamente tenemos que tomar en consideración el hecho que Jesús habló a un grupo de hombres que habían dejado todo para seguirle.
La promesa es mencionada dos veces antes en el mismo discurso. En Juan 14:12 Jesús les anima a pedir para que pueda traer la gloria a Su Padre. En Juan 15:16 Jesús hace la misma promesa dentro del contexto del fruto que dura.
Pedir “en el nombre de Jesús” no es una frase mágica que se adjunta al final de nuestras oraciones egoístas. Es la declaración que tenemos una lealtad completa a él después de haber dejado todo. Quiere decir que estamos buscando dar gloria al Padre y deseamos dar fruto que dure para Su reino.

Writing the Word Escribiendo la Palabra
Deuteronomy 27:8
8 “And you shall write very plainly on the stones all the words of this law.”

In many churches today there is a tendency to do a big show every Sunday. Some churches have whole teams of artists and creative people that work on the creative aspects of the Sunday service each week. It seems that the greatest sin a church can commit in 2006 is to be boring. We keep hearing about the need to be relevant.
I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just because I’m getting old. Maybe it’s because I’m a boring person but I’ve been studying the Bible since 1976 and I haven’t found a simple study of God’s word to be boring yet. It’s amazing to me that we read here that the people were to copy the words of God onto a wall in a very simple way with nothing fancy. Moses didn’t tell them to get an artist under contract. He didn’t tell them to come up with a big budget. He just told them to write the words of God down. I’m not against the idea that a building should look nice and be well maintained. I just get sad though when I see the emphasis of so many today. If we took away all of the fancy lighting, the great special effects, the great dance teams, the great power point presentations what would be left?
Psalm 119:40
40 Behold, I long for Your precepts;
Revive me in Your righteousness.

Let’s keep preaching the word of God in a simple and easy to understand way. There is nothing more beautiful than the word of God.

Muchas iglesias hoy día tienden a hacer un show grande cada domingo. Algunas tienen equipos de artistas y gente creativa que trabajan en el aspecto creativo del culto dominical semanalmente. Parece que el pecado más grande que una iglesia puede cometer en el 2006 es ser una iglesia aburrida o hacer un culto aburrido. Seguimos escuchando que tenemos que ser pertinentes. No sé porque. Tal vez es porque estoy llegando a la vejes. Tal vez es porque soy aburrido. Estoy estudiando la palabra de Dios desde 1976 y para mi un estudio bíblico simple de la palabra de Dios no me aburre para nada. Es sorprendente para mí leer aquí en este versículo que Dios mandó a la gente copiar la palabra de Dios en un muro y hacerlo en una manera simple sin nada extravagante. Moisés no dijo que tenían que contratar a un gran pintor. No dijo que tenían que hacer un presupuesto grande. Moisés dijo que la gente tenía que escribir la palabra de Dios en el muro y nada más. Sé que necesitamos edificios bien mantenidos y si es posible, bonitos también pero, me da tristeza cuando veo el énfasis de tantas iglesias hoy. Si sacaríamos todas las luces extravagantes, si dejaríamos de usar todos los efectos especiales, si no usaríamos el programa “power point” la pregunta es, ¿Con que nos quedaríamos?
Salmo 119:40
¡Yo amo tus preceptos!
¡Dame vida conforme a tu justicia!
Sigamos predicando la palabra de Dios en una manera simple y fácil de entender. No hay nada más hermosa que la palabra de Dios.

Little Sufers Surfistas Enanos
Psalm 34:3
3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,

The little surfers
We took a little time off yesterday so that we could take Pastor J.P. to see some of the beautiful beach areas to the south of Lima. Yesterday was Pastor J.P., last day here in Lima. He left early this morning. At one point we stopped the car along a high cliff and watched the surfers below. It was a beautiful day and we all enjoyed it thoroughly. When I was putting the girls in bed I asked them if they liked the ride to the beach. Anna said, “yes” and Priscilla said, “me too Daddy, especially when we got to see the little surfers”. I realized that she had seen the surfers from the cliff as I did. They were far away though and so in her young mind she didn’t realize that they were regular full grown people. She thought they were “little surfers”.
Hearing her expression “little surfers” I was reminded of the fact that for so many people their God is so small because they never take the time to get close to Him. They spend their time wrestling with their problems on their own or just not letting God do a greater work in them because they don’t really think that He’s big enough. Take time to really get to know the Lord and you’ll see that He’s big enough to handle all of your problems. Once you get to know how big and capable He is it will be exciting as you trust Him and let Him take you with Him out deep into the ocean where you will ride the big waves with Him. It will be the adventure of a lifetime.

Tomamos un poco de tiempo de descanso ayer porque queríamos llevar al Pastor J.P. a ver algunas playas hermosas que tenemos aquí al sur de Lima. Ayer fue el último día que J.P. estaba con nosotros. Se fue temprano esta mañana. Ayer fuimos a Punta Hermosa y nos paramos encima de un acantilado frente a la playa y miramos los surfistas abajo. Fue un día hermoso y lo disfrutamos tanto. Cuando estaba acostando a mis hijas en la noche les pregunté si les había gustado la playa. Anna dijo que si y Priscilla me dijo, “a mi también me gustó papi, especialmente cuando vimos a los surfistas pequeños.” Entendí que ella vio los surfistas del acantilado como yo. Estaban suficientemente lejos para hacerle pensar en ese momento que no eran personas normales. Pensaba que eran una especie de surfistas enanos.
Escuchando su expresión “los surfistas pequeños” me quedé pensando… para mucha gente su Dios es muy pequeño porque nunca se acercan a él. Pasan tiempo luchando con problemas sin el apoyo de Dios o simplemente no dejan a Dios hacer una obra más grande en sus vidas porque piensan que no es suficientemente grande para poder hacer algo. Es importante tomar tiempo para realmente conocer a Dios y si lo haces verás que él es suficientemente grande para solucionar todos tus problemas. Cuando ya lo conoces y ves que es capaz será emocionante dejar que te lleve al mar profundo para poder correr las olas con él. Será la aventura de toda una vida.

El Fin de Semana The Weekend
El fin de semana fue bonito. El sábado en la noche fuimos a Villa Maria. Me acuerdo que hace no mucho tiempo éramos una iglesia que tenía a muchas mujeres ministrando pero pocos hombres. Comenzamos a orar por más hombres dispuestos a ministrar. Saliendo de Villa Maria vimos que fueron más hombres que mujeres. Ayer también fue impresionante parar mí. Subimos en la van para ir a Carabayllo y vi que éramos hombres no más. No quiero que sigamos ministrando siempre con un grupo de puros hombres pero fue bonito esta vez. Gracias Señor por contestar nuestras oraciones.
This weekend was really nice. Saturday night we went to Villa Maria. I remember that not too long ago we were a church that had a lot of women ministering but we didn’t have very many men. We began to pray for more men willing to minister. Leaving Villa Maria I realized that there were more men than women. Yesterday was great for me too. We got in the van to go to Carabayllo y I saw that there were only men. I don’t want us to minister with just men always but it was nice this time. Thanks Lord for answering our prayers.

We began to pray for more men willing to minister. Leaving Villa Maria I realized that there were more men than women. Yesterday was great for me too. We got in the van to go to Carabayllo y I saw that there were only men. I don’t want us to minister with just men always but it was nice this time. Thanks Lord for answering our prayers.

Pastor J.P.
Pastor J.P. está con nosotros esta semana. El es de la iglesia Calvary Chapel de Miami Beach. Es amigo nuestro hace muchos años y está aquí en Lima por la tercera vez. Anoche enseñó del libro de Isaías. Mañana estará enseñando la historia de la iglesia. Va a compartir con la gente en Villa Maria en la noche también. El domingo estará enseñando la palabra en Surco en la mañana y en Puente Piedra en la tarde. Gracias por venir J.P. Te queremos bastante. Eres una bendición para nosotros.
Pastor J.P. is with us this week. He’s from Calvary Chapel Miami Beach. He’s been our friend for many years now and is visiting us in Lima for the third time. Last night he taught us from the book of Isaiah. Tomorrow he’ll be teaching church history and in the evening he’ll be sharing with the people in Villa Maria. On Sunday he’ll be teaching here in Surco and then he’ll be in Puente Piedra in the afternoon as well.

This verse is talking about King David. I have often prayed to the Lord that as a Pastor I will be able to do the same. For those of you that attend other churches, take a few minutes to pray for your pastor today. Pray that he will be a man of integrity of heart and skillful hands… in other words, the ability to minister effectively.

Este versículo habla del rey David. He orado muchas veces con este versículo en la mente para que yo pudiera ser y hacer lo mismo. Para aquellos que asistan a otras iglesias tomen unos minutes hoy día para orar por sus pastores. Si asisten a Koinonia también necesito oración. Oren para que su pastor sea un hombre de integridad de corazón y capacidad de sus manos… en otras palabras para que pueda ministrar en una manera eficaz.

A mi me gustan las paredes así porque es menos trabajo. Está bonita así. Así los niños no tienen que preocuparse por ensuciarla. En vez de comprar pintura podriamos dar el dinero a los pobres.
I like the walls like this. It´s less work. It´s pretty like this. This way the children won´t have to worry about getting it dirty. Instead of buying the paint we could give the money to the poor.
