Just a reminder to pray for the ministry in Villa Maria each Saturday night. We have the opportunity to preach the gospel to people that would never make it to our building. We will only be able to take advantage of the opportunity if we´re praying.

La reunión dominical en Surco The Sunday meeting in Surco

Tuvimos nuestra primera reunión dominical en el nuevo local en Surco hoy día. Fue lindo poder celebrar la santa cena. Otra cosa buena es que pudimos tocar el cajón sin preocuparnos mucho por los vecinos. Vamos a mejorar poco a poco cada semana. Gracias a todos los que colaboraron en muchas maneras para hacerlo todo posible.

We had our first Sunday meeting at our new building in Surco today. It was really nice to be able to celebrate communion. Another good thing is that we were able to play the cajón without having to worry about the neighbors. We´re going to get a little better each Sunday. Thanks to everyone that helped in so many ways to make this all possible.

La Mudanza Moving

Ya faltan solo 10 días para hacer nuestra primera reunión en el nuevo local. Ya tenemos que salir del lugar donde estamos. Tenemos hasta el Domingo no más. Por favor, oren por nosotros porque hay mucho que hacer todavía. Falta terminar el techo, pintar el salón, poner las luces, comprar el tapizón, terminar la entrada, mudar a la familia Vander Kodde, terminar los baños en el departamento (oren por el gasfitero que muchas veces no viene a trabajar), etc.

Only 10 more days until we will have our first meeting in the new building. We have to be out of our present location and so we don’t have another choice. We have permission to be in this place until Sunday and that’s it. Please pray for us because we have a lot to do yet. We have to finish the roof, paint the room, put the lights, buy the carpet, finish the entrance, move as a family, finish the bathrooms in the apartment (please pray for the plumber, a lot of times he doesn’t show up to work), etc.

Pasamos un tiempo bonito en la iglesia ayer en la mañana. Alabamos al Señor, escuchamos Su palabra y nos visitaron los títeres de Villa María. Los títeres hicieron un show especial. ¡Su show era bastante gracioso! Todos se rieron un montón. Fue difícil para mí controlar mí risa. Fue muy bueno experimentar un cambio en el culto. ¡Gracias títeres! Son lo máximo. Les apreciamos mucho.

We had a great time at church yesterday morning. In addition to worshipping the Lord and hearing His word we had some special guests. The puppets showed up from Villa Maria. They did a special show for us. They were hilarious. Everyone was laughing so hard. I was having a hard time controlling myself because of laughing. It was great to have a little change in the service. Thanks to the puppeteers. You guys were great!

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart,2 saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man.3 “Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’4 “And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man,5 ‘yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ”6 Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said.7 “And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?8 “I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

If this parable teaches us anything at all, it teaches us that there is a connection between prayer and faith. As your prayer life goes, there goes your faith. Many people think that the person that has faith is always at peace. It’s not necessarily true. The person of faith is the person that brings all of his problems, and every detail of his life before the throne of God. He leaves them there. This is the way that, after having prayed he is able to live in the peace of God.
It’s also true that you won’t really pray, at least not in the true biblical way if you don’t have faith. We pray because we trust in our Lord. He knows what’s best and has the power to change any situation. He’s not like the unjust judge in this parable. Our Lord is eager to hear us and grant us our request but He does it in His time. Keep praying today. It’s so easy to go through life forgetting the blessing we have in communicating with our Father throughout the day.

Charles Spurgeon on prayer, “Prayer is the FORERUNNER OF MERCIES. Many despise prayer: they despise it, because they do not understand it. He who knoweth how to use that sacred art of prayer will obtain so much thereby, that from its very profitableness he will be led to speak of it with the highest reverence.”

También les refirió Jesús una parábola sobre la necesidad de orar siempre, y no desmayar, diciendo: Había en una ciudad un juez, que ni temía a Dios, ni respetaba a hombre. Había también en aquella ciudad una viuda, la cual venía a él, diciendo: Hazme justicia de mi adversario. Y él no quiso por algún tiempo; pero después de esto dijo dentro de sí: Aunque ni temo a Dios, ni tengo respeto a hombre, sin embargo, porque esta viuda me es molesta, le haré justicia, no sea que viniendo de continuo, me agote la paciencia. Si esta parábola nos enseña algo, nos enseña que hay una conexión entre la fe y la oración. Como va la oración en tu vida, así va tu fe. Muchos piensan que la persona que tiene fe siempre está tranquila. No es así necesariamente. La persona que tiene fe es la persona que presenta todos los problemas y todos los asuntos de la vida delante del trono de Dios y los deja allí. Así la persona de fe, después de haber orado puede vivir en la paz de Dios.
Hay otro aspecto de la parábola que también es importante. Los que no tienen fe no oran o por lo menos, no oran en una manera bíblica. Oramos porque confiamos en el Señor. El no es como el juez injusto en la parábola. Nuestro Señor es deseoso de concedernos nuestra petición pero lo hace en Su tiempo. Sigue orando hoy. Lamentablemente es muy fácil pasar toda la vida olvidándose de la bendición que tenemos en poder comunicarnos con nuestro Padre durante todo el día.

Carlos Spurgeon dijo esto acerca de la oración, “La oración es el precursor de las misericordias. Muchos desprecian la oración. La desprecian porque no la entienden. El que sabe usar el arte sagrado de la oración obtendrá mucho por ella y así por lo que se puede ganar atravez de ella hablará de la oración con una reverencia sublime.”

Missions Misiones

Something to think about.

In the last 6 months several churches have had to cancel planned missions trips to Peru. Canceling these trips has been disappointing for the home churches and for the churches here in Peru as well. The reason for the change in plans has been soaring costs.
Due to the increase in travel costs it may be necessary for churches to reevaluate the present idea of sending large groups to do a week or two of short term missions. Short terms missions are effective when it comes to increasing awareness in the body of Christ regarding the great commission. Short term missions’ trips are also good because they allow people from the same church to spend time together. While they minister together they grow in friendship. It´s always great to see a big group working together in unity too.

Our church has been so blessed through the short term teams that come down. We do see however that it may be more effective to pool the money that would be spent to send 20 people on a trip for two weeks and use that money to send 4 or 5 for two months. The largest cost of a missionary trip is the money spent on the airline ticket. This way a smaller group could easily stay a much longer time. The smaller group could consist of people that are already actively involved in some aspect of missions in their church. Those chosen for the longer trip could be the people that area considering long term missionary service or those that speak the language of the country where the group will be ministering. Of course the selection of the group would depend on various factors. The group would be formed after much prayer and the confirmation of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 13:1-2) This would mean a change in strategy for many churches. In many churches the attitude has been, “instead of taking that vacation to the Bahamas why not go on a mission’s trip? The results of this approach have been at best a mixed bag. Some that haven’t been interested in missions have changed but most of the time the opposite has occurred. Those that have looked at a mission’s trip as an alternative to a vacation have been a distraction to the team and a stumbling block to the local church.

Taking time to pray and select a smaller team offers certain advantages. This way the church could still be involved in sending “short term” missionaries. At the same time the smaller number that are sent could bring back a good report Those selected will have their lives changed in a deeper way and have a potentially greater impact on the area that they are sent to minister. Smaller churches that could never make a large missions trip according to the conventional way of doing things would be able to send one or two people to an established ministry where they could really be used of the Lord for a period of time.

Maybe your thinking, “Well that all sounds great but what do we do with the larger group?” You mentioned that one of the benefits of a short term mission’s trip is that new friendships are formed. If we only send 4 or 5 then we will be lacking the large group experience. I would suggest that there are many opportunities to minister in the inner cities near the church or even in the church neighborhood. Ministries closer to home could provide an introductory experience to missions at a fraction of the costs. A big group could minister in an area like this for a weekend or one day a week. Those interested in making a commitment to a longer missions trip of 2 months or so could even be selected from these groups that minister closer to home. Ministering closer to home could even provide the future missions team with some preparatory training. Inner cities are filled with people from other cultures that speak other languages.

En los últimos 6 meses varias iglesias han tenido que cancelar viajes misioneros al Perú. Cancelar estos viajes ha sido desalentador para las iglesias de los Estados Unidos y para las iglesias del Perú también. La razón por los cambios de planes ha sido el aumento de costos.
Debido al incremento de los costos de viajar tal vez será necesario reevaluar la práctica común de las iglesias de mandar grupos grandes al campo misionero. Normalmente esos grupos grandes ministran una o dos semanas. Viajes misioneros cortos son eficaces en el sentido que aumentan en el cuerpo de Cristo la visión de misiones y la gran comisión. Viajes misioneros son buenos porque también permiten a la gente de la iglesia pasar mas tiempo junto y ministrar juntos. Amistades nuevas son formadas. Siempre es bonito ver a un grupo grande ministrando en unidad.

Nuestra iglesia ha recibido muchas bendiciones a través de los grupos que han venido. A pesar de esas bendiciones tal vez sería más eficaz juntar el dinero que gastaría un grupo de 20 personas en 2 semanas y pagar los gastos de 4-5 personas que podrían quedarse en el campo misionero 2 meses. El mayor costo de un viaje misionero es el costo del vuelo. Siguiendo lo que estamos sugiriendo el grupo más pequeño podría quedarse en el campo misionero más tiempo. El grupo pequeño podría ser formado de los que ya están ministrando en algo que tiene que ver con misiones. Los que están considerando ser misioneros de largo plazo y los que hablan el idioma del país donde va el grupo formarían parte del grupo también. La selección del grupo dependería de varios factores. El grupo se formaría después de haber orado y después de haber recibido la confirmación del Espíritu Santo. (Véase Hechos 13:1-2) Esto implicaría un cambio de actitud en el caso de algunas iglesias. En muchas iglesias la actitud ha sido, “en ves de tomar vacaciones en las Bahamas, ¿Por qué no hacer un viaje misionero?”
Este enfoque ha sido un surtido de lo bueno y lo malo. Muchas personas han optado por hacer un viaje misionero con su iglesia en ves de tomar vacaciones y han regresado del viaje con una visión más amplia en cuanto al ministerio. Mayormente ha sido una experiencia contraria. Los que han elegido hacer un viaje misionero en vez de tomar vacaciones y sin haber sido llamados, han sido una distracción para el equipo misionero y una piedra de tropiezo para las iglesias en el campo misionero.

Tomando tiempo para orar y escoger el grupo misionero con cuidado brinda ciertas ventajas. Así la iglesia todavía está participando en la obra misionera y podrá recibir un buen reporte de lo que está pasando en la obra mas allá. Al mismo tiempo los que forman el grupo pequeño experimentarán cambios más profundos en sus vidas y podrán ministrar más eficazmente. La potencial de impactar una zona con el evangelio de Cristo es más cuando un grupo se queda 2 meses que cuando un grupo se queda una o dos semanas. Iglesias pequeñas que nunca han podido hacer un viaje misionero al estilo convencional podrán mandar una o dos personas a un ministerio ya establecido donde Dios los usará por un tiempo.

Tal vez estás pensando, “todo esto suena bien pero, “¿Qué hago con el grupo grande? Brian, mencionaste que un beneficio del grupo grande es que la gente del grupo forma amistades nuevas y que así muchos participan en el ministerio. Si mandamos a 4 o 5 no mas nos falta la experiencia del grupo grande.” Yo les sugeriría que hay oportunidades de ministrar cerca de la iglesia. Hay barrios pobres. Hay barrios donde viven muchos emigrantes con sus culturas distintas. No hablan el idioma o no lo hablan bien. Ministerios en barrios así dan una experiencia parecida a la del viaje misionero a una fracción del costo. Un grupo grande podría ministrar en un lugar así un fin de semana o un día a la semana. Aquellas personas interesadas en hacer un compromiso de 2 meses al campo misionero podrían ganar experiencia en un ministerio así. Podrían ser elegidos para el viaje misionero del grupo así también. Ministerios así podrían ser una parte de su entrenamiento.

The Giant Girl La Niña Gigante

Last week I wrote about the little surfers that Priscilla saw at the beach. The other day we went to a big hardware store to buy some lights for the new building and we decided to take Priscilla along. I didn’t notice the huge banner with the picture of a girl smiling. Priscilla noticed it right away. This time she said, “Daddy, look at the giant girl”. One week she thought she had seen midget surfers and the next week she thought she had seen a giant girl!
I remembered the story of the children of Israel and how they sent spies into the promised land. When the spies came back to give their report 10 of the 12 spies said, “There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” Numbers 13:33

The children of Israel thought they could never conquer the Promised Land because the enemies were so big! It’s interesting to me that many times we think that are problems are so huge when to God they are nothing at all. Our own fear makes the enemy look bigger than he really is. Many times the people that we fear are not to be feared. We’re God’s children! If they are against us they should be afraid, not us. Later we read about what the enemies of God really thought about the children of God. They didn’t view God’s children as grasshoppers. Listen to what the Bible says, Rahab said to the men: “I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. “For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. “And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.[1] Joshua 2:9-11

The next time you’re tempted to fear, remember that God is with you as a Christian. Jesus promised, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

La semana pasada escribí acerca de los surfistas enanos que Priscilla mi hija vio en la playa. Hace unos días fuimos a una ferretería muy grande porque teníamos que comprar unas lámparas nuevas para el nuevo local. Decidimos llevar Priscilla con nosotros. No vi la bandera inmensa colgada del techo. Era una gigantografía de una niña sonriendo. Priscilla la vio al toque. Esta vez dijo, “¡mira papá, mira a la niña gigante!” Una semana pensaba que había visto a los surfistas enanos. La semana siguiente pensaba que había visto una niña gigante.
Me hizo recordar la historia de los hijos de Israel y como mandaron a doce espías a la tierra prometida. Cuando los espías volvieron y dieron su reporte dijeron, “También vimos allí gigantes, hijos de Anac, raza de los gigantes, y éramos nosotros, a nuestro parecer, como langostas; y así les parecíamos a ellos.” Números 13:33
Los hijos de Israel pensaban que nunca podían conquistar a los enemigos porque eran muy grandes. Muchas veces nuestros problemas también parecen ser tan grandes que jamás podríamos conquistarlos. Nuestro propio temor los hace más grande que de lo que realmente estos son. Muchas veces la gente a quien tememos no es gente que debe ser temida. ¡Somos hijos de Dios! Si esas personas están en contra de nosotros, ellos son los que deberían temer. Mas tarde leemos lo que los enemigos realmente opinaban acerca de los judíos, Rahab les dijo, Sé que Jehová os ha dado esta tierra; porque el temor de vosotros ha caído sobre nosotros, y todos los moradores del país ya han desmayado por causa de vosotros. It’s amazing. Whenever we are in the middle of some of the greatest blessings from the Lord we seem to be in the middle of some of the biggest battles too. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to just enjoy the pleasant things without complications?
The day is coming when it will be possible. Until that time God continues to mold us and make us into His image. Thanks Lord for the good and the bad. It’s all necessary. You don’t waste a bit of it. Until that day when we’re with you help us to concentrate on the positive and good things that you’re doing.


Hebreos 11:16
Pero anhelaban una mejor, esto es, celestial; por lo cual Dios no se avergüenza de llamarse Dios de ellos; porque les ha preparado una ciudad.

Por lo demás, hermanos, todo lo que es verdadero, todo lo honesto, todo lo justo, todo lo puro, todo lo amable, todo lo que es de buen nombre; si hay virtud alguna, si algo digno de alabanza, en esto pensad.

Es increíble. Cuando estamos en medio de recibir muchas bendiciones del Señor, también nos encontramos en medio de batallas muy grandes. ¿No sería mostro poder disfrutar de las cosas agradables sin tener que enfrentar complicaciones?
Viene el día cuando será posible. Hasta aquel tiempo, Dios continúa con su plan de moldearnos a su imagen y semejanza. Gracias por lo bueno y lo malo Señor. Todo es necesario. No desperdicias ni una gotita, ni un momento. Necesitamos tu apoyo para poder concentrarnos en lo positivo y las cosas buenas que estas haciendo hasta aquel día que tú nos llamas a estar contigo.

Love in the Family Amor familiar

Matthew 24:12
“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.[1]
Proverbs 22:15
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;
The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

If we want a family without love, one sure way to achieve it is to raise up our children without discipline. I meet more and more parents who don’t understand the connection between lawlessness in the home and a lack of love.

Mateo 24:12
Habrá tanta maldad que el amor de muchos se enfriará,

Proverbios 22:15
La necedad es parte del corazón juvenil, pero la vara de la disciplina la corrige.

Si queremos una familia sin amor, una manera segura de lograr tenerla es criar a nuestros hijos sin la disciplina. Estoy conociendo a mas y mas padres que no entienden que hay una conexión entre permitir la maldad en la casa atravez de la falta de reglas y guías y la falta del amor.
